Latest Bar Reviews  Your Bar Reviews
> Dokie Dokie Review
A new karaoke bar in The Quadrangle complex, opposite the BBC and behind Odder on Oxford Road.

> Black Dog Ballroom Review
Due to open in October 2009, the Black Dog Ballroom promises drinks, pool and an underground New York feel.

> Bar Fifty 7 Review
Tucked in the far reaches of the area loosely defined as The Northern Quarter, Fifty 7 Bar flirts with Piccadilly Basin – perhaps this could see the birth of the Basin Quarter? We hope not, but with a few other places dotted around – namely Lamarr’s and Moon – it makes a trip to, or through, these little streets for a pint or two a more attractive prospect.

> The Basement Review
***May 2009*** In the space that was The Soundgarden, rumour has it a new bar called The Basement is on its way. What, who, when and, indeed, why are all questions we don’t know the answers to – we’ll let you know when we find out.

> Taps Review
***May 2009*** Taking the ground floor spot in The great Northern Tower, below champagne specialist and newcomer Epernay on the first floor, Taps brings an altogether different offering to the party. Far from the magnums and flutes upstairs, each table in Taps gets...believe it or not...its own tap. Yes, of beer. Sit down, get some glasses and fill them, and yourselves, up as much as you wish. No more visits to the bar, no queuing, no endless fiddling with change. Just turn up, drink as much as you wish and pay on your way out. Brilliant. Taps is due to open soon. When we know, you’ll know.

> The Chocolate Cafe Review
Opened in May 2009, the second in a chain hailing from Ramsbottom, The Chocolate Cafe specialises in all things chocolate, from drinks to pizzas. Sandwiches, jacket spuds and usual cafe fodder are all also available.

> Baby Platinum Review
In the building that used to house Direktors, Baby Platinum takes up where they left off providing fully nude dances for ?10 and VIP booths in ?opulent and elegant? surroundings.

> Electrik Review
Filling the space left by Revise, Electrik opened to little fanfare or notice in March 2009. As a result, and also probably due to its DJ owners, the Unabombers, it's forging itself a reputation as the place to be.

> Kro Old Abbey Inn Review
Another of the Kro family housed in the clinical surroundings of Manchester Science Park and within walking distance of Kro and Kro 2 on Oxford Road. The Old Abbey Inn is miles away from Oxford Road in feel if not distance, however, surrounded by modern office warehouses and car parks full of Audis, the clean roads and pavements see little traffic during the day and only the odd leather sole of a Science Park worker?s shoe at lunch time. It?s a nice place though, small and cosy inside and quiet enough to be pleasant outside when the weather?s good, although you don?t get the people watching facility that you do at the brother and sister bars on Oxford Road. A decent, well priced menu and country pub feel make it worth seeking out if you?re in the area and don?t fancy going to a sticky-floored student favourite.

> House 9 Review
House 9 is the brainchild of a new Tameside company who plan to open three new venues in Manchester city centre in 2009. House 9 is going to be the first of these three with a planned opening date set as 1 May 2009. The idea for House 9, they tell us, is to bring a bit of an independent, quirky feel to the Deansgate Locks area. ?Even though we are next to Deansgate Locks, we'll be very different to the bars that are already there,? says Ben Burgess, one of the company directors. ?They do their job well, but we're trying to create something with a different identity. It could be the first of a new independent scene in this part of the city.?

> The Corner Review
A new venture from the Trof collective, The Corner moves away from the eclectic but refined taste of its sisters and brothers (i.e. Trof and The Deaf Institute) and moves more into what we can only describe as squat-chic. 'Underground' and 'relaxed' are probably kinder words to use, but there you go. It's also on a corner, unsuprisingly, and aims to bring some of the best underground DJs and music to Fallowfield.

> The Gin Club Review
New for Fallowfield's student population, a place whose mission statement is a simple 'Music and Liquor', The Gin Club brings a touch of city centre elegance to the 'cheap pints and shots' offerings of the area's other nightspots. An interesting idea - let's see how the students take to cocktails and decor over beer and benches.

> Noho Review
Another new opening that sees the Northern Quarter trendy zone stretching further east to Stevenson Square. We?ve heard a lot about Noho, from the origins of its name (some area in New York) to its drinks policy (no draught ? although policy is perhaps the wrong word as they?re, apparently, unable to store it due to the building?s listed status). So we went down to see what it was like, take a few photos and generally be able to report back to our lovely readers about what it?s like here but...we couldn?t find it. I know, embarrassing but true enough. In our defence it was day time, so no neon lights to seek out, and cold, and raining, and...err...that?s it. We?ll give it another go soon...watch this space.

> Corridor Review
Brand new for 2009, Corridor opens in January a stones throw across the river from Deansgate (and technically in Salford). Coming from the famed, and award winning, brains behind Socio Rehab, Ian Morgan, one would expect nothing less than cocktail opulence. And that, it seems, is what you get. Initial information suggests a minimal, sleek interior, heavy on a moody red colour scheme, and a drinks list that errs on the trendy cocktail side, rather than the bag of peanuts and a quiet pint side of things. Classics will of course be offered (Mojito, Margarita, Martini) alongside ?Corridor Specials?, which seem to be slightly different versions of the classics (Corridor Mojito, Corridor Margarita, Corridor Martini). Interesting idea but surely a Mojito that contains pineapple and coconut is just a different drink altogether? Anyway, we?ll go and check it out once it?s had time to warm its cocktail shakers up, so check back to see what we thought!

> Bijou Review
***Update March 2009*** The slightly confusing situation as to whether this place is actually open or not has been cleared up thus: The officialy launch night is on Saturday 28th March - that's for Saturdays@Bijou. The club's been open for a couple of months already, however, on Thursday and Friday nights - 'Censored' every Thursday, 'Sintillate' every first Friday of the month. We're not sure when the launch night was for them - they just seem to have opened. So, presumably, you can go to Bijou on Friday 27th March for a normal night, then go to their EXCLUSIVE OPENING NIGHT the following evening. Confused? You will be... On the site of the old Cocoa Rooms, Bijou pulls no punches - it's swanky, expensive and very exclusive.

> The North Pole Bar Review
Erected by Manchester-based events company Ear to the Ground, The North Pole Bar will be in the city centre for just eight weeks this winter. Promising to be a wintry haven from the stress of increasingly testing shopping trips, the bar serves up some specially designed, winter cocktails as well as a selection of warming stews. Striking in appearance, the large white point of the tent looms to the side of Urbis; a pathway lined with Christmas trees takes you to the entrance of what is essentially a big tent. Inside the North Pole theme becomes apparent, with various accoutrements pertaining to the magnetic location. It?s sparse inside to be truthful, with little more than the bar and a few chairs and tables dotted around, but they are promising some big party nights with DJs and live bands. Find out what we thought of the North Pole opening night here.

> Apotheca Review
Another trendy hangout adding itself to the Northern Quarter list, Apotheca is linked to neighbour and 'sister' restaurant Dough, both opening in November 2008.

> Direktors Review
***Updated May 2009*** Direktors is now Baby Platinum, a gentlemen’s club offering...well, all the things gentlemen’s clubs offer. If you don’t know you probably shouldn’t be going. A new lapdancing bar on Princess Street that plans to open it's doors in May 2008.

> Orlandos Review
A well timed new opening for Chorlton, Orlandos Bar (and restaurant) has been set up by one of the original brains behind Sankeys Soap. It promises to offer something a little bit different for Chorltonites. Within the first few months of opening they're bringing Howard Marks (the former smuggler turned book writer) and comedian Felix Dexter. The emphasis, according to owner, is around food more than drink, and the modern building, and the clean interior, is a little different from bars and pubs in Chorlton, where the mantra is "the grubbier the better". Outside is a terrace - a must for this area - and inside the menu varies between a decent sized all day breakfast, and spicy mains (chicken dishes, and the venues home made sausages).

> Bar Epernay Review
***Updated May 2009*** Those plans became less tentative and more pro-active with Epernay opening recently in The Great Northern Tower on Watson Street. The venue is on the first floor and delivers perhaps what you might expect of a champagne bar – classy surroundings and lots of champagne on offer. Perhaps not likely to appeal much to the crowd frequenting the bars nearby (Brannigans, Chicago Rock, Walkabout et al), and even if it did one suspects most wouldn’t get in anyway, Epernay will surely be looking to attract custom from the nearby convention centre/Midland Hotel/posh restaurants around Deansgate. ________________________________________ A Birmingham based champagne bar that has tentative plans to open up an outlet close to Peter Street.

The Podium turned out to be a little disappointing for me and my partner. The restaurant ambiance was very nice. The service was poor. The food was ok, but I left wanting to go grab a sandwich. Overall 4/10. Will I return? No!

> Long Legs Review
I came here for the first time and frankly was disappointed. They're definitely over exaggerating on the jolly reviews. They're making the girls sound loads better than they actually are. I was like no way, is that the best they've got?! I even firmly believe too that the coms are n't even genuine. I think they've been put on by the girls and staff to bring people in. Rather a shabby trick! I found myself standing at the bar for ages before I finally got served. It's so annoying when you can't get served in an empty bar. There was this tatooed foreigner and this scouser both with saggin arses and crap boob jobs and completely off it on drugs pestering me for dances. I did n't really see any one in there I liked. I just felt like I had to have a dance just for the sake of it. Honestly rubbish dance. The scouser went off with my change. Then a gang of hoodies came in. Two of them followed me to the loo and were asking if I had 40 quid to lend them. I then buggered off. Then there was this old trampy woman sat at the bar drinking with the bar staff. I could n't believe likes of her were even allowed in. She was dog rough! There are some dodgy characters in here. Some laugh and make fun of you. I kept gettin pestered by this other mouthy scouser. I did n't want to have another dance that I did'nt want so I said no. Then she told me to f**k ff you dirty perve. She was completely out of it. I have n't been in since. I have happily taken my business elsewhere.

> Lounge 10 Review
I went Lounge 10 on Saturday 20th June 2009 and was disappointed by the whole experience as my friends had had lunch there the previous Tuesday and raved about how fantastic it was. The food was disappointing and expensive for what you got. Not a huge choice of wine either. The live entertainment was OK at the beginning of our evening but the volume increased throughout the night to the point where myself and my friends could not hear each other without shouting. I won't be going back!

> The Circle Club Review
I went to the circle nightclub on Saturday 20th June 09. We where a group of girls who travelled from London. I was appalled and disgusted at the service we received from your door staff/reception, Far too much attitude and disrespect which was a shock considering we had a table. I would never go back.

> Mojo Review
I've been twice to mojos and i think its a brilliant place, for those that are complaining it's 'dingy' or 'cruffy' get a fucking life, it's a rock and roll bar it's not going to be dressed up to the nines esp with people dancing on tables and the window cills like they were on friday (which may i add made an incredible atomosphere) i think the decor is ace, the lighting makes it just that little bit different. As for the staff, i think they're lovely. A weirdo was annoying me and a friend a few times and also at the bar, i told the barman who swiftly and sternly told him to co-operate and leave us alone. I don't think the prices are bad either, £5 for a random coctail is not bad one bit, in an average sized glass aswell. All you lot that complain about the prices should get back to 5th av or 42s where the prices are cheaper but drinks are smaller and in a silly little plastic cup! And one last thing, it's bound to be busy, for gods sake, EVERYWHERE and anywhere popular will be, if you want a quiet bar then don't go out at weekends and avoid manchester at all costs!
