Cocoa Rooms review

Cocoa Rooms manchester photoThe Cocoa Rooms is currently closed and undergoing a refurbishment

It now takes a huge effort to gain entry into the top ten of Manchester bars, with venues such as Tribeca, Living Room, Grinch et al all firmly entrenched.

The Cocoa Rooms is situated opposite Manchester Cathedral, although most people don't even know we have a cathedral here never mind the location. It's at the bottom of Deansgate, and nearby 'landmarks' are Harvey Nicks, The Living Room and Selfridges.

The venue itself was the former home of Club Lash, a fetish outfit that we (thankfully) know very little about. Needless to say it couldn't have been that popular as it's now closed - quite unnecessary in a football mad city where MCFC put their fans through pain each and every Saturday.

Back to the point - The Cocoa Rooms is a trendy new bar-cum-restaurant that's aimed at the Living Room/Ampersand/The Restaurant crowd. In short, does it deliver? Absolutely, and with style. The first floor restaurant has received rave reviews, although the wide range of dishes does affect their focus. Prices range from £2.50 for starters and sides, and anywhere between £10 and £20 for mains, deserts come in at the £5 mark. The dining experience is typical of a venue like this, with excellent attentive service underneath the swooping archways that reside above your head. The venues name lends itself to the dark chocolate and cocoa tan leather that resides within the bar area, and as long as your comfortable with modern tastes then you'll love the way it looks.

For drinks the Cocoa Rooms is a different story - still a great venue, incredibly good looking and with excellent attentive bar service and mixologists, but with long queues outside each Friday and Saturday and the bouncers barking the inevitable 'Guestlist Only', it can be hard to get into. Plan ahead, and get yourself on the list - or better yet grab yourself a membership. Ring, blag, and try the Cocoa Rooms at least once!

I ventured to the Cocoa Rooms with some London boys who were impressed with the food. The bar area was heaving by the time we'd finished so only managed the one, gonna have to return.

After reading all the hype on the Cocoa Rooms I couldn?t wait to find our whether it was worth the rave reviews. I went to the Cocoa Rooms for dinner on a Friday night. My fianc? and I were kept waiting at the reception for at least 10 minutes when there were many staff that just walked past. After getting the attention of a waiter we were seen to our table for a Friday night it was fairly quiet. Expecting things to get better at this point we waited a further eternity for our drinks menu, then again for some one to take our order! When we had finally ordered drinks and food we were optimistic on the food making up for the poor service we had received, surprise surprise the food was average to say the least we ordered a noodle dish which was hotter than a vindaloo, so much so I didn?t even get through it and their fat chips were burned potato wedges smothered in rock salt. All in all I was utterly disappointed especially as it was very quiet and they had staff hanging around chatting rather providing the service required. As for the people in the kitchen I hope I just caught them on a bad day, with the poor quality and taste I encountered the clientele they are trying to attract will not get past a first meal.

I visited Cocoa rooms on saturday wanting a change of scenery from Liverpool.
I have to say it totally exceeded my expectations. We had reserved a booth prior to going so entry was not a problem. We were shown to our booth by very pleasant staff who really looked after us while we there.
The music and atmosphere were great, the decor is beautiful yet simple and the clientele a mix of young professionals and your usual saturday night femme fatales (with empty purses)
My only complaint is that for a bar of this size there are only 3 ladies toilets cubicles, so be prepared to wait a while.
The terrace area is also beautiful overlooking the cathedral. This bar is well worth a visit, but do plan ahead for guest list.

this place is too over rated. I visited here in july, and we finally got in after about 1 hour. It was rubbish inside with lots of wannabees looking out for rich men!

i visited the cocoa rooms VIP last night, i had a amazin night the people especially the bar tenders were friendly and happy and the music and view was amazin, the only down fall was the unisex tiolets and the tiolet attendent who was very ignorant.

Very very disappointed.

Unapproachable door staff, considering me and my 5 girlfriends were hawked at before being 'allowed in for a dink' the clientele they'd already let it left a a lot to be desired. Ladies loos - bad bad bad.

Unnecessary attitude, jobsworths and great view of 'Bobs Autospares' from the decking.

Not the best place in Manchester by far.

loved the cocoa rooms when I went there last year with friends from South Africa. Bouncers gave us up-hill, when the place was rather quiet. Nonetheless after name dropping a couple of footballers from SA that we know well, we were allowed in very swiftly, and diven access to all areas within the place.

We had a great time though, great drinks great vibe and the men there were just fab!

What has happened to Cocoa Rooms?? Went last night and after 20 minutes we left and demanded a refund after paying ?20 entry. (To be fair refund was granted without a quibble) Last went to Cocoa Rooms in September and had a fab night. How it has changed.... It really seemed to have lost the exclusive feel it's always had. Unfortunately, dont think we'll be coming back to Cocoa Rooms in a hurry..

Ive visited the Cocoa rooms four times over the last year with my daughter, who worked for a P.R. company in Manchester. I have to say Gemma (manager) was a true professional, friendly, welcoming and dealing with any trouble which presented. Security was excellent! WOULD RECOMMEND ANY TIME!

Is it reopening any time soon? Does anyone know? They have a nice area for smokers...

Is this EVER going to re-open? Why did it shut? Can't have been for refurbishment as it wasn't open long enough to need doing unless it's undergoing a complete transformation?
I really liked it, shame as there is nowhere else like it in Manchester

It will never re-open and the building is currently being stripped out and gutted. Oh well, never mind.

Cocoa rooms will reopen at the end of Sept. The deco is out of this world with new designs in all the rooms. Manchester hasn`t seen anything like this in along time. Be prepared for long queues and dress to impress. The wait will be worth it

It would be nice if this blog had date and time stamps against the entries so people can see the relevance of a posting. I live in Manchester and CCR has been closed for about 2 and a half years.
