Common review

Common manchester photoA gorgeous anti-corporate bar set in the midst of the resurgent Northern Quarter. Common is hidden away down Edge Street, and with neighbours like Bluu and Simple you'd expect it to be uber-chic and full of trolley dollies. Thankfully it's not, and instead you get the feeling that the entire buildings budget was spent on artwork. Adorning the walls are huge spray and template pieces, ranging from intense j-pop kids to super-cute animals with imaginary toilet rolls. Inside the bar is absolutely tiny, but there are plenty of seats and cubicles. A good range of local deejays play (again, mostly anti-corporate stuff) from Thursday thru Sunday.

Having taken over such a strange space for a bar, Common has worked incredibly well. The only fault levelled at the bar is the state of the sound system, with what looks like a 1987 Goodman's hi-fi speaker acting as monitor. Small complaint for an excellent bar. Get your scarf on and get down there.

What a bar! Nice vibe, great people, and pretty much a perfect place. Musicly there are no problems, and take myt advice and do what we do - head down on a Saturday night for some of the best records in Manchester!

Popped down there after going to Matt and Phreds for a quick drink and had a really good time there. Stayed for a few more than one. The music was brilliant with a really good atmosphere/vibe. The art on the walls really gave it a unique feel.
Loved it!

Seems unfinished in lots of ways this bar, just could quite frankly be so much better. The guy behind the bar tried, but was really lacking in knowledge and for the price they charge, a bit embarrassing really. I always support independants and expect to pay more, but then you should be getting better service than from the faceless corporates. They have a good music policy, but other than that it's just a bit bland really. I prefer Trof - so much more to this bar and Odd of course always comes up trumps as it's so cosy.

anti corporate to me means beers for ?2 A BOTTLE not ?3.50 upwards thanks, i'll try it once then probably wonder what all the fuss was, thats how these bars become sadly one hit wonders. Its common in the sense that these independents all have something in common: the clientele! usually full of southern pretentious mummys boys/daddys girls paying their rents! bugger off back home and stop trying to take over....

Its crap. Whats so good about this place? Common? Why are there so many "uber cool" bars opening, whatever happened to the good old English pub? Instead we're getting all the knob*ers walking about with skinny jeans and thinking their cool. I prefer the gay village, its much better and you can pull easier and last week they played the London Boys 3 times in one night at Thompsons.

After an enjoyable beer in TV21, we headed down Edge Street for "Common". Looking in through the window we could see it was about half full, with a few smokers hanging around outside. We were prevented from walking straight in by the doorman who commented, politely, "Can you queue this side please". Queue???? Are you having a laugh? Anyway, NO - we couldn't queue! So we went to the Millstone instead, which is a better pub anyway.

spent the afternoon in here, went to the cash machine and came back and the bouncer wouldnt let us in. Said "sorry no groups of lads", there were 4 of us who had eaten and drank in there just half an hour earlier and we had friends(mixed) inside. BAD ATTITUDE! SORT IT OUT!

how the f**k can any of you pricks say that common is a s*itty bar. Yeh true is has its pricy element, i have never been stoped by the bouncer even if it is packed he probly didnt let you in cos you looked like a d*ck. Its never full of mummy and daddys kids, or southern wankers who trying to hard to be cool. Tony Godfray, simply, what the f**k are you chattin about, you would rather go down canal street then visit the northern quarter, then clearly you one of those, who wears to much hair gell, and listnens to radiohead just so you can tell people you like them, but really im sure you prefer a bit of oasis, or artic monkeys. Gimmie a break the lot of you, sure there are better bars in town example 'troff', but if you wanna drink, i nice chilled laid back atmospehere with some decent music not the type of s*it you hear in lets say ampersand, or birdcage or any other of those disappointments, then go common, then after try some matt n phreds, or troff. Clealy non of have any taste or charisma.

Cord used to be great when Andy Votel djed there.
I went one night and heard Brian Eno, Jethro Tull, some Turkish stuff and a bit of folk thrown in.
Now that's a good night, however, Cord seems to have gone a bit off the mark lately, perhaps the change of decor has attracted the Blu bar corporate lot, who are no different from the Deansgate Locks posers.

at the end of the day a bar is good if you and you group of friends choose to, never been into common nor am i probably going to as i am in manchester very rarely, why do these pages get so full of stupid remarks, yes i have read everyones opinion and replies and not all of them are stupid but wats the point of slagging each other off about and a bar apparently half of you have been to and aren't going to go back one mans p*ss is another mans pleasure just remember that before you all start slinging stupid names at each other! surely the lowly chav deserves those sorts of insults (a chav only qualifies if A, their I.Q. is less than 10 and B. theyy have a fixation with nova's and argo jewlery)

a great bar but much better during the day when you have the space to chill out or enjoy great food in relaxed atmosphere.

i think some of you are missing the point that maintaining independence means having prices that reflect the fact you don't get the same discounts as chain bars?

to be honest i'd rather the haters stayed at the printworks and canal street, you can keep your orange facepaint and confused smart-casual workwear. people are sick of you invading the nice parts of manchester every weekend.

The Problem with Common is most of the Northern Quarter "try hards" who drink in there spending the credit cards Mummy and Daddy have provide for them and the bar staff are up they own skinny jeans, stop pouting a pull us a pint!
