A packed diary means that you can head down on almost any night of the week to see great musicians play within a sultry environment, there's a range of fresh food on offer that won't break the bank, and they've got a fun selection of cocktails. Based in Manchester's Northern Quarter Matt and Phreds has been around for over eight years, and in that time a number of key bars have opened around it - the kind of bars that attract people with trendy haircuts and far too much make-up. What warms that heart is that in face of this increased competition and changes in the area, Matt and Phreds is still going strong and providing something that it's neighbours can't! The venue takes part in the annual Manchester Jazz Festival (usually the last week of July) and you can check out the Matt and Phreds website for up-to-date listings. Why not add your own review? Rob says... Dean says... Well Rob, I was working last night and it would appear my new haircut and freshly pressed clothes didn't impress! The rumor [we're not the 52nd state yet incidentally] of the club getting through 8 managers since August is beyond pathetic. Should you or anyone else require official records to prove my point I would be happy to provide them. It saddens me to hear that the club has [or should that be I have] become a laughing stock. Thank heavens the positive reviews, letters of thanks and steady increase in trade don't reflect your perspective or I really would be in trouble. You are correct in your assertion that the reputation of a business is crucial in ensuring longevity/success. According to characters such as you the clubs' reputation has being going downhill since December 16th 2002 [when I first got involved] which would make any graph used to describe this prolonged decline fascinating [for fascinating read boring] viewing. We work hard here and strive to do the best we possibly can in, often, trying circumstances. If you, like a few others, have personal issues [with me] so be it but please address them to me directly and leave the club and the hard working staff alone. Better still, if you don't think we care about what we do you could always go to the Sandbar for your Jazz. Mind you, the privilige of seeing the same acts will cost you at least ?5 [on a Tuesday evening] should you wish to do so. If your grievances were genuine you would have used the contact information provided here [for both the club and myself] and given me the opportunity to address your issues. Sadly, as with a handful of others with less than honourable intentions you chose to use a public forum to attempt to undermine Matt and Phred's. I sleep well at night knowing we are working hard and doing our best. I hope you feel equally satisfied with your efforts. Anonymous says... Who played last night Rob? Trio, Quartet, Singer, Pianist? Just curious. Anonymous says... Anonymous says... Fascinated Bystander says... Anonymous says... Dean Moull says... Fascinated Bystander says... Dean Moull says... cheryl says... Dean Moull says... Hi Cheryl My name is Dean and I'm the owner of Matt and Phred's. I assure you that I've not been made aware of any such issues [as described in your posting]. Would you be kind enough to contact me at the club on 0161 831 7002 [please leave a message if I'm not about] so I can find out more about your less than pleasurable [and unacceptable] visit to the club. Many thanks. Dean Anonymous says... Did you go to the same place I did or are you just up your arse!? Anonymous says... cheryl says... Dean Moull says... Dear Cheryl Please note that the 'anonymous' posting in response to your comment was not made by the club so I'm at a loss to see how it could represent the 'patronising response' you expected. Furthermore, the one 'actual' response from the club [myself clearly] was in no way at all patronising yet has failed to illicit any contact or reply [compared to the vigor with which you responded to the aforementioned anonymous comments]. Best wishes Dean fasinated bystander says... Dean says... The wonder no more [and if you insist in using anothers' name please try and spell it correctly. It should be fascinated]. Maybe shouldn't have skipped English in order to practice playing the sax. I did indeed indicate my reluctance to post future comments. However, I think it is clear that I've also said that I am more than happy to respond to genuine customer comments/criticism be them positive or negative. So I've employed [and presumably suffered a series of unexpected resignations by the same] 8 managers in the period from last August? Whilst I love the notion of an invertebrate being in a position to 'back up' anything this clearly won't be providing an example. A quick review of payroll and staff contracts/offer letters yields a paltry total of 2 such personnel [one of whom continues to make a huge contribution to the club] and I am left a little concerned about my apparent loss of 7 members of staff. Perhaps our better informed commentator can provide some enlightenment [or more appropriate in the circumstances, 'a moment of clarity'] I do share the correspondents' eager anticipation for the opening of the 'new' Band On The Wall'. As to the inference that it will resolve the absence of a 'real club' I can only request that the estimated author provides us/me with a suitable definition to use as a template for any future endeavours. Thinking about it, a shorter response would have be 'sod off whoever you may be [and any reader familiar with the recent history of Matt and Phred's will know the true name of fascianted bystander] and spend your time on a more fruitful pursuit [maybe an adult education class in English would serve as a rewarding personal investment]. Anonymous says... Hey bystander - I've applied for a job there and am interested in your obvious intimate knowledge of goings on at Matt and Phreds. Who are the 8 managers and why did they leave? I have a shift there soon [hopefully] and don't want to waste my time and end up becoming number 9! Cheers Dean says... Anonymous says... Anonymous says... What makes you feel that Dean is being 'overly aggressive'? All I can ascertain from the entertaining comments posted thus far is that he has either, in the case of genuine criticism, merely enquired as to the nature of the customers' issues and offered to address them where possible or, in the case of 1 or 2 comments clearly posted by those with a malicious motive, responded in a remarkably restrained manner. Clearly the notion that the owner of a venue responding to customer comments is unacceptable to some who post here [perhaps if the complaints were genuine they would have been put to the management of the venue at the time of the alleged visit and therefore rendering such purile rubbish unnecessary - but where would the fun be in that]. I happen to know that a number of reviews have been posted by these 'brave' souls [fortunately subsequently removed for legal reasons] that attacked not only him on a personal level but also his wife and their relationship. This is meant to be a forum for residents of and visitors to Manchester interested in finding out about and/or commenting on the many bars and restaurants in the city. If the obviously malicious correspondents' here had actually visited the venues they attack then perhaps they would be reporting on their attempts to discuss their issues with the management at the time of the visit rather than compose the limp and ill-concieved nonsense available for all to read here. Matt and Phred's isn't perfect but the staff, the musicians and yes, even Dean, work damn hard as far as I know as is evident from the many genuine [and complimentary] reviews in the press and on sites such as qype. Missive over - perhaps we can return to honest and appropriate commentary concerning this and the other bars, restaurants and music venues in Manchester. Anonymous says... Anne-Marie Ruutel says... Anonymous says... Idiot. Prices are the same as everywhere else despite having to pay band and sound engineer fees. Not only that if you have a couple of drinks you get a free pizza [the best in town]. So about ?6 for 2 pints and a freshly made pizza. Actually that does sound ridiculously expensive. It's not clear when you visited the place but they've been refurbishing the place over the last few weeks. Perhaps if people stopped breaking things and writing banalities all over the place in the misguided belief that they are being pithy and creative it wouldn't need such attention. Tell you what, take your ?5 [on the basis that you clearly haven't got ?6] and leave Matt and Phred's to the vast number of loyal supporters of the place. As I said, IDIOT! Jazz Fan says... Anonymous says... As the old adage says, give them what they want so here I am! Forgive the diatribe [Matt please try a better disguise in future] but I have to say that I find it amusing to find a comment criticising Matt and Phred's and its music programme that makes reference to a musician who happens to perform at the club on a regular basis. If he [meaning Matt or 'Jazz Fan'] had any 'balls' he'd buy the club and make it the great place it used to be/should be and enable the place [love those brackets, community] to be rid of my ineptitude once and for all.
