The Eagle Bar review

***Updated May 2010***
The Eagle is well and truly open – a constant flow of punters through the doors since its opening suggests this will be a village favourite for a while yet.

It is worth noting, however, for those of you keen to establish the ‘rules’ of a venue before embarking on a visit, that The Eagle operates a ‘Men Only’ policy. So don’t plan a visit if you’re out with female friends.
There are signs outside and the beginnings of a website, but that's about all we know about The Eagle at the moment. We reckon it'll be along sometime in April/May 2010.

hi, i,ve had a sneek preview of Eagal Bar, The opening day is tuesday the 20th of april. The painting and final touches were been done, but it looks like the lads (nick and andrew) having had a blank canvas have done a brillant job. There are plenty of nooks to sit and chill. A good sized dance floor for you party animals and a seperate bar area for a more intimate night.Plenty of toilets so your not caught short, and they are all nicely done out and not cramped like many of the village loos.Company, legends, and the Rem have to raise their game to match this bar(as have alot of the village. So it's one to check out.

Great to have real ale in a gay bar

disappointing, when you think of eagle bars in other cities, madrid, amsterdam etc they have a common "feel" about them - sadly we have yet another prissy bar and none of the real eagle atmosphere that was so needed.

What a place really enjoyed my night and hope to have many more there. Not a prissy place just one of pure enjoyment. Good luck guys

Not really an"Eagle Bar" as we know it. A real lost opportunity. This bar is a bit prissy and will find it difficult to fill. It's too prissy for real eagle men and the name will put off other guys. How long will it stay open? Remember Falcon?

It would help to have gay men in a gay bar! The place was dead.

Well my first time back in the village for nearly 2 years and I'd say it was one of the best places nice and relaxed with great staff too! It was a Saturday night so was very busy!

I've been here twice now and enjoyed it both times. The Bear bash event was great! It looks like the place has had some money spent on it and I agree with some of the positive comments about the nice touches: good sized loos - and clean too - polite staff, great music, good cloakroom facility etc, but I also have to agree that it's not what I would say was in the traditional 'Eagle' bear/leather bar style. For example, the big gold mirror on the wall is not 'macho' at all. I also agree that Company, Outpost and Legends need to improve their act to compete. But Eagle also has to maintain its appeal by making sure it stays current and exciting. You only have to see the current state of the once-popular Rembrandt to know that gay men have no loyalty when it comes to drinking establishments. Anyway, some people are already saying there's too many gay bars now in Manchester and there's just not enough guys around to make them worth visiting, except at weekends. If Eagle wants to remain successful - which I hope it will - it needs to genuinely create someone different from all the other places in the Village. What about some really hot, muscle leather dance boys, bear pole dancers, special Saturday night events etc? Otherwise, some guys might start slowly drifting back to their old, familiar haunts. And guys, you should really have your website up and running by now The internet is where all gay guys - people who live in Manchester and visitors too - get their info. from and your website still just has only a home page and nothing else! Why? Where are all the pics from the opening party, if you even had one? I didn't know anything about the new bar until someone told me about it. Invest in some good PR in the gay media and create some excitement about the place. That way, you will suceed - big time.

I went last night and thought it was great - clean, modern, busy etc and NO HEN PARTIES Its that rare thing - a gay bar with only gay men in it. I've never been to Eagle bars elsewhere and maybe some who have will feel disappointed, but bars in Manchester can't allow the same sort of things to go on that happen in Amsterdam!
As it is, its what canal street should have - a proper gay bar. Other men only places end up being a bit dingey, gloomy and full-on. Some of us aren't prissy scene queens but neither are we looking for leather boys and slings. This is a great mix and the split between the two bars is a great idea.
As for whether it will be a success, it needs to stay fairly 'mainstream' and it'll be ok. I don't know any of my gay mates who actually like Canal Street; its a means to an end and is usually a grim night out being barged into by women and their boyfriends. More men only bars are what is needed.

I agree with many of the comments made. Its definately NOT like the Eagle in AMsterdam. Needs to be way more Macho. Maybe its not trying to be the same. I really don't know.
I think it definately has the potential to be a great bar. It needs to get its act together. Website advertising.
Theme nights and lots of PR.
Good luck.

The Eagle has recently been quiet. Maybe they are offering cheap deals in order to drum up support. Maybe they are just getting desperate. Who knows?
