The area had fallen upon hard times - and this was most evident with the awful Piccadilly Train Station - so most Mancunians avoided it like the plague. Roll forward to the modern day and Piccadilly is unrecognisable, with a stunning new station, new apartment buildings and finally a host of modern, upmarket hotels. The Malmaison was the first to land, and since then the City Inn and the Macdonald Hotel have opened up - all huge hotels that offer excellent service (in a mass-market boutique hotel kind of way), but more importantly they do so without costing the earth (rooms at all three come in at around ?100, often lower). With the city centre just a few minutes walk away (Piccadilly is really part of Central Manchester anyways) and the cool, quirky shops, bars and restaurants of the Northern Quarter right on your doorstep Piccadilly is now the place to stay.
