Young Mancunians get Emo-tional over a beach. related links: urbis beach Last weeks news that Manchester was to get it's own beach was troublesome for Urbis, the team behind the mammoth project. They had feared that their city centre neighbours would get wind of the event early on and block it, but little did they know that the biggest obstacle was from the Skaters, Goths and Emo's (The new name for, basically, teenagers) who frequent the square. The space that, in a few weeks, will be covered with 80 tonnes of sand is now home to a motley collection of kids, who aren't too happy about being usurped for a beach. "It's one of the only places we have left to hang out, chill and generally act like a teenager" notes the 'Against Urbis' flyer. With the battle cry of "Don't let the government strip you of your identity", the kids have put together a Myspace Page and over 200 people have now joined the fight. The page, which includes a 'Say No To The Urbis Beach' cut-out-and-distribute flyer design, sets out the tone for the group: "If anyone tries to hand me a flyer for the beach then I will set fire to them" says 'BillieTheSkankyManc', and there's a regularly updated commentary on who has ink left in their printer, and thus who can actually print off some copies of the flyer. The idea of a 'sit in', to prevent the sand being laid, was brought up but unfortunately it was 'too late' (even up and coming political activists have bed times). The group's second plan was to hand out flyers, but Manchester City Council has banned street flyer distribution, and anyone out on the street without a license can be fined - which can add up to several weeks pocket money. Their last word is from a well-connected young poster, who is already getting a grasp of how local government is run; "My dad works for Manchester Council and he said that whatever petitions are going on the beach is definitely going ahead". And the ultimate aim of the beach? "[They're] trying to get rid of people making the Urbis area look untidy". Bingo! To balance things out there's also a 'For The Urbis Beach' myspace, which has slightly fewer supporters (143 vs 200), but does count such luminaries as Urbis themselves, Clint Boon and us. The page has, of course, descended into an emotional rant and the posters were more than prepared to bash some of the young generation for their beach-hating antics. One pro-beachite comments "Emos are just scared of anything to do with sunlight", whilst another mocks "At least I can go to sleep wit my eyes dry and my wrists pretty". Afterthoughts As one reader notes below, the Beach isn't going to be forever. We've heard the date September 9th as a potential end point, which coincides nicely with the end of the (theoretical) Summer.
