Beach review
Updated June 2010

The beach is back! Last year saw an attempt to revive the infamous Manchester beach project – an idea hatched a number of years ago to provide Ian Brown with his much quoted lament. It didn’t really work for a few years (did the builders sand really have fleas in it one year?) and an attempt by the council to take the idea on never really came to fruition (too wet that summer, if memory serves) but last year Sankeys returned to the beach theme with an import of sand and an idea to bring a touch of exotic goodness to this fair city.

This year provides Sankeys with an excellent excuse to reinstate the beach for the summer – the World Cup. The Bahamas sand is back apparently (a fresh lot, we hope), as well as a BBQ, outside bar and huge screen to watch all the England and Brazil matches on. There’s even a shower and a Jacuzzi for those really feeling the tropical vibes – or, without wishing to tempt fate, if we actually get some sunshine this summer. There are three bars in total at Sankeys, each geared up to screen the England and Brazil World Cup matches, so if the rain does come there’s always the good old roof-over-head trick.

The Beach at Sankeys will be open from the start of the World Cup – Saturday 12th June.
It’s been a number of years coming but it seems Manchester is finally going to get its beach - thank you Mr Ian Brown. After a couple of failed attempts in the Urbis area in the last couple of years, Sankeys have had enough and are making sure that this year we finally get our beach. 50 tonnes of Bahamas sand has been dumped in Ancoats and will be acting as a summer chill out party area, open daily from midday to 10pm from 23 April to 27 September 2009. You can expect cocktails, art, cinema screens, tunes, food and, of course, a relaxed summer vibe. Entry is free but be warned - Beach Club will only be open when the weather permits.

"Manchester has everything except a beach" said Ian Brown, forgetting that the River Mersey in Didsbury has something akin to a sandy shoreline. Now, of course, Ian is most definitely wrong, as word reaches us of a monumental party this Summer in Manchester City Centre.

The "Beach Club Manchester" kicks off on June 25th (License permitting) and is expected to run through till the start of September (Nicely avoiding a clash with the returning Warehouse Project) with the promise of deck chairs, 80 tonnes of imported 'fairtrade' sand, booze, food, volleyball and free wireless internet (which makes it a great destination for the laptop driven office worker!)

More to come, including the final confirmation that the event will go ahead, soon.

England vs USA - The World Cup starts here!

I think it will be a good idea, although I do agree with the rain idea because it does rain a lot in england and it may be cold, but wireless networks and deckchairs woo! and as for the emos/chavs whatever, i'm sure they all can still go there to enjoy the beach i mean come on they all have to mix in schools and everywhere else, get over it!

'urbis is the one place they all can hang out without being beefed on' <

ok,ok listen everyone has there views i think that a beach would be OK but havent you people ever thaught about the fact that it may rain! you know in england! the place where it rains A LOT i mean c'mon urbis is a huge glass building which just so happens to be green the grass realy compliments this and it looks very "urban" hence the word and place urbis think about it people wont die if it stayes the way it is but there is a place like what there gonna do to urbis in burmingham so fight my argument if you please coz im right! im sure there are places that look horrid coz they are empty and full of s*it and rubbis they shud clean them up and do it there or maybe piccadilly gardens but that could cause a riot and a lot of traffic. but the thing is im not even a mosher and i understand everyone has there views but its also the fact that the moshers are always like beaten up by chavs or harmed emotionally chavs go piccadilly gardens its just a matter of fairness and you lot dont think of the bad siodes like the smell when it rains "ew" seegulls may come lots of tourists it will be skanky and some people might even vandelise urbis SO THINK ABOUT THIS PEOPLE! x says...

f*ck the moshers/emos whoever came up with the idea should be commended for having a brillant insight, Sankey's is the best experience and if their putting it on it will be out of this world. (S)

we think the beach is the best idea to come to manchester where everyone of all ages can come and enjoy themselves and its free to get in. There is going to be top dj's playing and live bands what could be better than that For all the ones who are slating the beach then just dont come!

I agree with this beach idea, I think it's a cool idea and it's inventive...
However, all this slating of moshers/emos/chavs is unnecessary. They have kinda made Urbis their own, but guys a bit of sand won't hurt much, I've been to see it and it isn't where most of us hang out.

As for people who are complaining about moshers/emos, it's more chavs that are the problem [not all chavs, just destructive ones], because moshers/emos prefer to just chat and chill rather than go around smashing things up.

Chill out people (H)

It doesnt matter what you put there, us moshers and scallies and other "grouped up idiots" arent going anywhere. Urbis is a place for people who dress how they like and make friends with other people like that; there isnt anywhere else in manchester we can do that without being "beefed" on. Moving us away from Urbis would just put 300 teenagers on the streets...which wouldnt exactly be a smart move

will NOT leave the urbis area.
so doubt you'll be "reclaiming" the land :]
adults make me laugh.

This city doesnt revolve around Moshers and Chavs, most of us cant stand either of you grouped up idiots, should you be painted white on a skateboard or burberryed up, Its a great Idea... I hope it cleanses the area of Moshers and lets the real people of Manchester claim back that area... not freal who travel from all over to stand around looking at each other looking like freaks.. Cant wait..

Think the 'Beach Club Manchester' sounds wicked... you've certainly got my vote Manchester is a great city which will be improved by your project. There is the possibility it could attract scallies, but lets face it, they're everywhere... and they're unavoidable. Still, there are plenty of other Mancunians that will benefit from this so why let the Scallies ruin it for everyone else

right, I must say this duz seem like a fantastic idea
but . .
right now Urbis is a nice place, where the moshers/emos/ect. . . of manchester and the surrounding area go, this is there place in Manchester, like chavs and scallys have there place, though some chavs try causeing trouble with the moshers of Urbis is seems ok most of the time
you bring a beach into the equation, you basically f**k the system up, booz and free internet, this will bring in chavs, they get drunk and cause lots of trouble, this will no longer become a failry quite place, and us moshers get thrown out,

its all good for the city and gives the city more press and brings more people in that will come more often and spend more money, of course it will have to be run properly to keep the fools out but its all good! the two haters below need to wise up.
