ManchesterBeachManchester ![]() Every Beach review Updated June 2010 The beach is back! Last year saw an attempt to revive the infamous Manchester beach project – an idea hatched a number of years ago to provide Ian Brown with his much quoted lament. It didn’t really work for a few years (did the builders sand really have fleas in it one year?) and an attempt by the council to take the idea on never really came to fruition (too wet that summer, if memory serves) but last year Sankeys returned to the beach theme with an import of sand and an idea to bring a touch of exotic goodness to this fair city. This year provides Sankeys with an excellent excuse to reinstate the beach for the summer – the World Cup. The Bahamas sand is back apparently (a fresh lot, we hope), as well as a BBQ, outside bar and huge screen to watch all the England and Brazil matches on. There’s even a shower and a Jacuzzi for those really feeling the tropical vibes – or, without wishing to tempt fate, if we actually get some sunshine this summer. There are three bars in total at Sankeys, each geared up to screen the England and Brazil World Cup matches, so if the rain does come there’s always the good old roof-over-head trick. The Beach at Sankeys will be open from the start of the World Cup – Saturday 12th June. ____________________________________________________________________ It’s been a number of years coming but it seems Manchester is finally going to get its beach - thank you Mr Ian Brown. After a couple of failed attempts in the Urbis area in the last couple of years, Sankeys have had enough and are making sure that this year we finally get our beach. 50 tonnes of Bahamas sand has been dumped in Ancoats and will be acting as a summer chill out party area, open daily from midday to 10pm from 23 April to 27 September 2009. You can expect cocktails, art, cinema screens, tunes, food and, of course, a relaxed summer vibe. Entry is free but be warned - Beach Club will only be open when the weather permits. ______________________________________________________ "Manchester has everything except a beach" said Ian Brown, forgetting that the River Mersey in Didsbury has something akin to a sandy shoreline. Now, of course, Ian is most definitely wrong, as word reaches us of a monumental party this Summer in Manchester City Centre. The "Beach Club Manchester" kicks off on June 25th (License permitting) and is expected to run through till the start of September (Nicely avoiding a clash with the returning Warehouse Project) with the promise of deck chairs, 80 tonnes of imported 'fairtrade' sand, booze, food, volleyball and free wireless internet (which makes it a great destination for the laptop driven office worker!) More to come, including the final confirmation that the event will go ahead, soon. Why not add your own review?
