Manchester

We tried this place for the first time in June. It's NOT an alternative club as their fliers say, it's just a bog-standard indie/student night, of which there are SO many better already about in Manchester outside of the gay village. If you like the village and 'safe' indie music, you'll probably like it, and it does admittedly get busy with those who do. If you like something a little different than the mainstream though, head out elsewhere!

i love the ting tings. please please please play them i watched them play at homoelectric the other week and they were awesome.

Good shout there. The cloth cap people are the beards who help welp with homoelectric (another great night) i think. one of them is nice but the other one just bitches about people everytime i see him (it's claire here btw).

I can't comment on how it was before but i think it's nothing like poptastic indie room at all. I've never heard tracks by prince, aretha franklin, amy winehouse, sonic youth, magazine etc played in poptastic but do get them in bollox which is why i love it so much. Mixing the music up is always a good idea but to be fair apart from a handful of staples everytime i've been there's been a different mix of tunes. Their website says you can anyone can do a Dj slot so why don't you ask them and help mix it up a bit more? As long as you play some ting tings i'll be happy to dance for you ;)

When it first started, Bollox was an interesting venture and I had a couple of good nights there. Then it started turning into a venue for boring electro-elevator-type music filled with pretentious flat-cap wearers who sneered at anyone without a beard and not in designer-Oxfam wear (available from the Northern Quarter). It has improved again since that version (thank goodness!), but it's now just like Poptastic's indie room used to be. It's good that there's an alternative to the usual 'gay discos' so prevalent in the village, but I'd rather go to a night where I can't predict the playlist so easily.

Bollox isn't a gay club. Me and my missus have been going for the past few months and have had no problems getting in, and thankfully the crowd is not heterophobic so we feel really comfortable there. id estimate probably about 80% gay 20% straight. best atmoshphere and decor for a club i've seen in years and it's the only place where you can dance to motley crue followed by chicks on speed. With bollox and homoelectric you can't go wrong for a decent night out without towny knobs spoiling it.

hi mick. I was there last week too and agree it's the best thing to happen in manchester in years. I got some knickers on my wall too. going to try and get a full line of them one night. On holiday next month so can't make it :(

We got tickets for the show from fopp. You missed a treat for sure. CSS were sooooo good. We saw then in Bollox (wow - geat nite, see you next month) afterwards but were to scared to say hello. chickens. I need sleeep.

I read on Myspace the The Gossip are playing a secret show at Bollox on Friday 18th March. Anyone know whether this is true? If so will it still be a gay only night?

A refreshing addition to the manchester gay scene. Great music, atmosphere and decor. Loads of fun and best of all the crowd is gay. I hope it doesn't do a herteroelectric (sorry, homoelectric) and become a trendy discoteque for fashion sheep. Will be making a Bollox a monthly thing.
