Flow has now moved to Club North on the Second Saturday of each Month

Sofa Central used to be the lynchpin of student life if you lived around the UMIST campus, but how times have changed. Despite it's central location, and a decent array of options for the penniless, the venue has suffered at the hands of trendier bars and finds itself a little bit lost.

Despite the struggling trade in the main bar, upstairs, the downstairs club-space has taken on a new lease of life with a rotation of house orientated events that are doing rather well. We went down to visit Flow (Last Saturday of each month) in January to see what the fuss was about. Despite our early entrance the place was already busy, with a whopping array of good looking punters and some banging house tunes.

The music policy is 'vocal & classic house', but this isn't a shirts-off, hands-in-the-air type of night. The guys dress down whilst the girls make the effort ? Kinda ideal for a reviewer who prefers KHAKIS to DKNY, but rest assured this event is ticket only and this keeps out the undesirables.

My co-horts for the evening consisted of several serious house DJs, and one brought up the state of the mixing?a thorny issue. For me, the odd mistake is forgivable, and the night was more about tune selection than anything else. The sound system took a battering, as the bassier tracks hit home, and the tiny glitches made no difference to my overall enjoyment.

I wish I could remember some of the classic tracks played, and I could pad this review out with a rose-tinted look at yesteryear (don?t get me started on the downward spiral of the MoS Annuals), but sadly I was far gone, far too early. We headed upstairs to the main bar to relax, and then headed home. There?s another Flow coming up soon, and Ill be heading down to ?review? The place, check the quality of the vodka and to dig myself an early, alcohol fuelled, grave.
