Bluu review

As one of the first bars in the second phase of the Northern Quarter revival, Bluu is one of the busiest venues on the block with big-ass queues outside on a Friday and Saturday. Inside the venue consists of two floors - the welcoming upstairs bar, with plenty of seating and bar space, and the lower floor which is a bit more intimate - some might say sleazy. Although many argue that Bluu's popularity is waning, the selective door policy keeps this place a well behaved haven and you can't beat the restaurant during quieter times. Actually owned by the same people as Fat Cat's Cafe Bar on Deansgate Locks, Bluu still remains highly individual and is a great place to hangout - although it's mighty tempting to head over to the excellent Socio Rehab or Odd Bar (across the road)

Is it only me who hates the orange neon street-like lighting, the near darkness, the overrated food and the massive bill that follows it.
Some chav invasion also.Avoid.

Great place for cocktails. Downstairs is good - very cosy - and the restuarant isn't bad either.

Way to many chavs in Bluu but hopefully they will stay in there and not come over the road and ruin the likes of socio rehab.

If you want to have a girl's night out spoilt by surly waiters and letchy blokes in suits practising the world's dullest chat up lines...go for it! if not, try Socio across the road, much nicer!

Bluu is a great bar but much better during the day when you have the space to chill out or enjoy great food in relaxed atmosphere.

Having never visited the northern quarter before i was somewhat taken aback by the quality of the smaller bars in the area. Great brands for sale in a pleasant atmosphere and priced just right as not to attract the lower end of manchesters market.

Me and my fiancee ventured up to Bluu Bar quite pleased with the way our night had gone sofar and i was impressed to see that Bluu was a lot bigger that the others in the area.

As we apprroached the door we were asked by one of the door staff to go round to the side of the bar and wait until he started to let people in again. I thought this a little strange as we could see through the windows that it wasnt particually busy for a friday night. A foreign chap in the queue commented on how they must be trying to prove a point by making it look busier than it was.

Eventually we were allowed through and i went to the bar to order a drink for us both. I was greeted by a tall balding bartender who seemed very competent, moving along the bar serving 2 or three people at once (i spent 4 years working at tgi fridays in my youth and respect this style of bartending greatly)

anyway, i was asked along with 4 others what i would like and i told him that i hadnt decided yet so he carried on with the other orders. i watched with admiration as he remembered everyones orders (although he was a little rude to the guy next to me who misunderstood one of his questions). as he got to the end of the drinks i said that i would like a whisky and coke. Immediately, he stopped what he was doing, put down his glass and said ."ok, When im ready to serve you , i'l ask you. what you just did was rude and ignorant" I was absolutely gobsmacked.Tthis little jumped up punk totally humiliated me in front of all the customers at the bar and i was only trying to help. I went to collect my girlfriend and we left. I was furious.

This area of manchester is still up and coming and it is obvious to me having been in the trade for over ten years that they are trying to create an image of exclusivity and that is ok if the bar lives up to the air of arrogance that it gives out. Bluu bar doesnt. It is nice inside, but only nice. to be honest with its scuffed walls and damaged furnature it really is looking tired and could do with some money throwing at it before they can speak to the customers the way i witnessed when i visited.

I would love to apply to manage the bar and fire that snotty nosed git behind the bar and remind him who pays his wages.

I agree i wouldn't really go in on a weekend night its a bit chavvy and too busy. But if you venture into the bluu in the week its a much better night. The atmosphere is great, my friends and I came in for a meal the service was really good our waiter was very friendly and full of charm which i think makes the meal, the restaurant was quite busy for a tuesday night and he was the only person waiting on i watched him serve everyone with the same charisma as we had enjoyed chatting and joking with other customers. He sold me on that days special which was an assiete of fish it was beautiful but a bit small for the price. I've been in the catering business for some time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The same waiter served us later at the bar and servedus some sublime cocktails. I asked one of the bartenders what the name was of the waiter (i was going to ask him to work for me) she said he was the manager which i was suprised at because he seemed quite young but i can understand why. So go to bluu for a relaxed drink, the service rivals that of any high class establishment and the cocktails taste as good as socio (depending on who you get we got another round from someone else and they weren't half as good).

Very chavy and really doesnt fit with the rest of the Northern Quarter atmosphere and clientele. Seems to be one of those bars that you go to on your first time to the Northern Quarter and then never again! Much better to stick with Socio across the road!

Went in Blu for my birthday once and was made to feel like crap by the very rude bar maid. Having done bar work for a number of years I can understand how stressful it can be when the bar is busy.
The bar staff in there have to be the rudest I have experienced in my life and put a bit of a downer on a good night out.
I cannot understand why they make you queue behind a rope when the place is empty either.
A very up itself kind of place full of not very nice people. Go elsewhere in the northern quarter.
