When you talk about an Indian restaurant in Manchester then the Curry Mile immediately springs to mind. This quarter mile strip of Neon and Popadoms is home to over thirty restaurants, sweet shops and takeaways that combine a mixture of Indian and Pakistani cooking. Some of the restaurants have been around for years - The Hanaan, Al Bilal, Lal Qila and Lal Haweli are all personal favourites - whilst others have sprung up recently. Monsoon Nights is one of the newer breed, and the entire restaurant is decked out in dark wood (the foods not bad either), but there's really something for everyone here and it's down to personal choice which one of the Rusholme restaurants is the finest. There is more to Mancunian curries than just Rusholme - the city centre has two of the finest up market Indians in the north west: Shimla Pinks and the recently opened Akbars. The latter is probably the current king, with a stunning dark interior and over-sized nan breads served on metal trees. There are others in the city centre, and most notable are the small back-street takeaways in the Northern Quarter. Some of these aren't your run of the mill fast food joints, they're actually highly authentic (and very cheap) places to sample Indian food, and it's worth exploring the Northern Quarter to find them.
