Still regarded as one of the top places for a curry in the city centre, however, Akbars seems to be maintaining something of a loyal fan base. Many comparisons were made in the early days with Shimla Pinks so it?ll be interesting also to see how their (apparently) imminent move to the depths of Spinningfields will affect this little rivalry. Still famed for its huge naan breads and lack of a table booking facility (you just have to turn up and take your chances), Akbars remains one of those places that you just have to try for yourself. _____________________________ Akbars Review Update: Last night I visited Akbars for the third time and my comments below still stand. There's a few things that I've noticed that are worth mentioning - firstly the chefs now bring the food out to the table. Almost unnecessary but a nice touch, if a little gimicky. The service is still good, note that I say good not excellent. Asking for the bill three times is excessive and sometimes the over-eagerness of staff does make them annoying. The food - above excellent, and I still love the 'Naan Trees', which were slated by Gordon Ramsay on his Kitchen Nightmares show. Overall still the best Indian in Manchester. A trendy new Indian restaurant for Castlefield, located underneath the Vicus building on Liverpool Road. Akbars originally started in Bradford back in 1995. The group now has four restaurants and their new Manchester base was their first foray out of Yorkshire. Now, Akbars isn't your normal restaurant. It's part of a new breed of contemporary Indian restaurants, a trend that was started in Manchester by the nearby Shimla Pinks (see later). When you walk into Akbars, off Liverpool Road, there's a small bar area for you to await your table. Drinks are served promptly - the prices are perhaps a mistake - and then it's off on a short walk to the back of the unit for our table. The waiter kindly placed candles around our table and the lights were dim enough so that we needed them. We were eating at 6pm on a Wednesday and the restaurant was packed, so service was a touch slower than I'd have liked, but we ordered our main courses and took on board the waiters suggestion that we only needed one Naan bread. When the meal came we saw why - the naan's are huge, and they're hung on the side of an almost indescribable metal structure (thus, I believe, maintaining the crispness of the bread). The rest of the food was top notch - and the bill wasn't too bad either. Getting hold of a waiter to re-order drinks was problematic. Comparisons will be made between Akbars and Shimla Pinks - both are modern Indian restaurants that have put effort into their designs as well as their food. Akbars is slightly smaller, has a more intimate atmosphere and - most importantly - now wins on style and substance (it looks better and the food is nicer). Akbars is just a hop-skip and a jump from Manchester city centre, and it's well worth a visit if you like Indian food. A word of warning: the on-street parking nearby can be a nightmare, thanks in part to the popularity of local restaurants and bars - but there is a free car park at the bottom of Duke street. Once you enter restaurant theres no clear sign to say where you should report. 3. Waiting area while you're waiting to be seated at your table could do with an overhaul. Seats should have a backrest. 4. PA system - needs to be clearer. 3/4 of the time you can't hear what the guy is saying, i guess thats a trick on his part so that you miss your call, then you end up losing your table therefore you end up drinking and then won't know what you're eating. 5. Lighting: for goodness sake I know we're living in an age where we have to save on energy but come on Akbar's get some decent lighting installed. 6. Menus: black background on menus, hardly a wise idea. Typefont should be clearer, oh and improve on that lighting. 7. Waiters - please give your customers time to choose. I had two of them hovering over our party to order. 8. Nan bread serving: now this makes me laugh. Why hang nan bread? As i sat down i thought why have next table got a nice decorative piece and we haven't little did I know that was nan bread. One of these days someone is going to be injured by that thing - just hope Akbars have covered themselves with decent insurance. After all a solicitor like me isn't gona give up easily should anyone be injured by that thing. 9. Desserts - 4 people in my party wanted ras malai - nope they're out of rasmalai. Ok, gajar halwa, hmmm no gajar halwa. ok we'll have ..... gulab jamun, at this point everyone wanted gulab jamun, hmmmm no we can only serve 6 people with gulab jamun cos we've not got enough. Well thats sorted us all out, cos we decide to settle the bill. Cheeky buggers didn't deduct the deposit I had paid!!! Good job I had my booking receipt, that soon shut them up. And as for a tip. They can wait for that just like I had to wait for a table that was booked for 6.00pm but they refused to sit us down because two people from my party were stuck in traffic on Deansgate and they wanted them to arrive before seating us.So the two remaining people 10 mins late - what do we have? A two hour wait cos they've gone ahead and given our table away. Come on Akbars! Ever head to a 'patience' No you cant have cos you want to pack as many human bodies as you can into that place. Oh one more point: Candles: if you've got long hair or you wear a long flowing dupatta please be aware of them damn candles because someone sometime is bound to get set on fire.
