Grill On The Alley review
Grill On The Alley manchester photoThe brand new Grill On The Alley has set tongues wagging in Manchester. Combining modern British and European dishes with speciality grills and steaks, the food is out of this world. The fact that this establishment is run by the Living Ventures team is no surprise - they seem to be able to roll out eateries at a frantic pace without compromising the quality.

Expect the bill to come in at around ?30+ for two, including wine. Despite the relatively high charge, the Grill On The Alley is well worth a visit.

Really don't want tor recount in detail how bad the food was here such was the bad experience - suffice to say that the vegetarian meal was one of the worst I've ever been served and the seafood platter that they're so proud of, and which costs £45, made my friends who ate it sick for two days. We wouldn't pay half the prices they charge for such slop - avoid.

We arrived on a Friday Lunch time, the waitress sat us in front of the fish counter, not a good position, we ordered soup it was very poor in quality, had to send it back very dissapointed, would not bother going back, thought the food very expensive for what you got!

This was a great experience. Waitress and service - 100%. Food - 100%. Atmosphere - 100%. But i will add there was no air conditioning that made things uncomfortable. Needs addressing, too hot.

The restaurant was smart in appearance and inviting although rather noisy once full. We sat next to the fish counter in front of the kitchen - not a good choice of table. The lunch menu was okay but the brocolli and stilton soup lacked substance and was watery and the prawn sandwich bread was dry at the corners. The discount of 25% although booked on line was not deducted from the bill - what a surprise. However the restaurant is pleasant and vibrant and all staff were very attentive and polite - it is a shame about the food. I would not spend £30.00 again for lunch.

Food & service excellent. One small problem. I filled out a card offering 50% off on next visit after a very pleasent 2hr lunch with the daughter at my expense. Guess who received the voucher - not me!
Not a happy customer, even after I called in to have a chat about my small but irritating problem, I still have not received a voucher. As you can imagine the daughter is still laughing and has since enjoyed using her voucher.

This was my third time at this restaurant in the past six months. I have been once for an afternoon meal, once in the evening with partner and friend and once for Christmas.
The food was ok the first time but they sat six of us in a booth clearly designed for four people, so things were a little cosy to say the least. I do like this type of food (Quality Steak, Fish etc) and despite the first time I went with a friend for an early evening meal, which was ok.
The food is just ok, nothing special and not a patch on Gaucho's in Manchester. If you are going out for a good steak my advice is to go to Gaucho the service is better and the food quality is far superior.
The thing that irritated us was they tried to put six guys in a booth that would not fit four of us comfortably. We immediately moved to a round table and told the girl serving us we could not stay there, as it was not comfortable. She said we would have to move but after telling her to get the manager to move us she seemed to leave it at that.
The main gripe was the place charges at the top end of the scale but the food you get does not reflect the cost. As an example they advertise chicken/beef skewers as a starter and they charge £5.95/£6.95 for these and they deliver one skewer for the price! We were disgusted at this as we thought skewers meant plural not singular!

Summary: The venue is nice, layout and design is good and it is very busy. The food and service let the place down, it is expensive (for what you get) and the girl that served us was embarrassed by the lack of volume in the food. I would say to anyone considering going, do not bother. Go to Gaucho's in Manchester instead as its better value for money and they have more choice and the people serving you are not robots.

I could say a lot more but I think over priced, poor value & terrible service/attitude just about covers it.

This is one of my "safe haven" restaurants. When you eat out often and like to try different places, it's great to know that there are places you can go back to and know that you won't be let down. Grill on the Alley is brilliant. The food is excellent, the service is excellent and the surroundings are great. As far as I'm concerned, for me to want to keep going back is recommendation enough.

we have been a couple of times to this restaurant definately worth paying for, the oysters are to die for and the steaks are great. taking some friends next week as we have to share a fantastic restaurant.

These guys are busy, bustling, professional and still manage to be attentive without interfering. The food is a sensation of classic and modern dining with a clear attention to only the best ingredients. Reasonably priced, me and my nine guests thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We even returned later to indulge in great cocktails and accoustic music at the late bar in the downstairs restaurant. Thank you Grill on the Alley.

Went with my partner and must say the food and the service were excellent. Cannot fault anything. Sian our server was very attentive but not pushy. She explained the menu fully, explaining what was off and any specials.

I had the Thai Fishcakes to start which were delicious. Nice big flakes of Salmon and potato. Nicely presented. My partner had the Camembert which he really enjoyed.

The mains were also excellent. Have found it very hard to get a decent steak in this country but have now found the perfect place. The steak was cooked to perfection. We did not have room for dessert but some of the options did look very yummy.

Will certainly be back.

We went to this restaurant a few weeks ago and I have to say we had fantastic service, the food was great, nothing seemed to be a problem at all. We were a large party and the puddings were a little late, the waitress knocked off the puddings from the final bill as well as the service charge for the whole party (without us asking) which I thought was very good.

I booked a table for my boyfriend's birthday and was a bit wary after reading the reviews but we thought we would give it a go. We got there at 5.30pm and were seated straight away. Our waiter Jed was very helpful but not forceful in the slightest. My boyfriend ordered the rib eye steak, asking for it to be medium and it came out perfect. He said it was the best quality steak he has ever eaten. I ordered the Shetland salmon which was the best salmon I've ever eaten. The only thing I was not happy about was the size of the portions in relation to what we were paying. I had to ask for a side order to make my meal a meal. However all together me and my boyfriend were really pleased. We will definitely be going back there again.

I went on a birthday surpirse. It was gorgeous, cannot fault any aspect of my visit, steak was delicious and the carrots in honey must be tried. Staff were very pleasant and service was superb. I liked it that much I'm booked in this friday as a surprise to my boyfriend.

Went on Friday night for a birthday treat. We arrived 15 minutes early but were seated at our table right away and our drinks were brought straight over to us. Hardly any wait at all for our food and it was all lovely, as was the service. Staff were very helpful and food was delicious. Absolutely nothing bad at all to say. Will definately be going again.

I've been three times and each time was great. The half lobster meal is amazing. If you've not been and you love steak and seafood you have to try this place.

I went here on Friday evening, the restaurant was busy but that didn't reflect on the level of service offered. The steaks were fantastic (as was the blueberry mess) and I will definitely be going back there again.

If you like steak, burgers and grills this is an OK place to go. But for fish and food that is served with sauces and more flavour I wouldn't recommend it - fish stew distinctly average. The waiters also kept topping up our glasses so you land up whizzing through a bottle of wine really fast then they invite you to buy another so you can end up with a big drinks bill.

Seriously I'd ignore the bad reviews. My girlfriend and I went for her birthday and had a feed of oysters followed by fillet and sirloin steaks. Absolutely brilliant, definitely puts up a good fight for Gaucho's. The review above says about £30+ for two, I spent nigh on £100 for two - but then you're going to if you wash your steak down with six mojitos!

Not impressed. Ordered fish and chips, was appalling, service typical of living doom training, oops I meant room honest.

Boring food, boring atmosphere. Boring. Stick to Bar and Grill for this type of food.

I have been here many times for drinks (cocktails) which are always good. Have been there for meals as well, food was always good.

I went for New Year's Eve. The evening was very, very good, lovely food, lovely company, lovely entertainment. Great way to bring in the New Year 2008. Excellent as usual. See you all very very soon, well tomorrow actually.

Went on Saturday last early evening, booked in advance. Short wait for table, staff very very good and attentive. Food was excellent but served on cold plates therefore if seated downstairs the food could have been hotter, basic error this. However I would go again as quality of food and staff was excellent

What a great place. Went today for lunch with the girls - really busy but staff were fab. Great mussels. I heard it was a steakhouse but they have loads of fish and other stuff too. Really impressed. Only negative comment I could make is that we had to wait for a table - bloody Christmas shoppers!

What a disgrace, we made a reservation for 9:30 and arrived on time. After 20 minutes we were told our table would be a further half an hour. We weren't offered a drink or explanation.

Obviously we left to find an alternate eating experience and will definitely not return to this poorly run excuse for an up market Berni Inn.

Went last night, everything was just OK, but very disappointed seeing the cook come out from the disabled toilet, and that was the only one working Me as a costumer and lady feel very uncomfortable waiting for cook to finish and then go in. That is a big no-no.

Went two days ago and very, very disappointed. My husband and myself are both big wine and food lovers. Ostrich steak came too fast, over salted and on a greasy, cold plate. My lobster was OK. What surprised me a lot is that when the manageress came to open our £45 Rioja bottle she struggled a lot, didn't know how to open a bottle of wine. Waiter service was good but I was really disappointed with the toilet as none of them was working. They sent me in the disabled one and I had to wait for a cook to come out, not really a good impression.

I feel that I must defend this place as I took my girlfriend here on her birthday (18.6.07) before a night on the town. I was actually impressed, drinks were prompt, food was to a high standard and the management almost blew my socks off. We got there a bit late but no problem and sat straight away. (I had dropped a little gift for her earlier that day to have it waiting on the table but it wasn't there) We ordered some drinks that took no time at all. To start with I had some very nice fat juicy prawns served in a mini frying pan and she had the soup served in a mini cauldron, I loved this.
Then we both had a steak, some sides and a bottle of wine. I managed to spill hollandaise sauce everywhere that someone cleaned up with minimal fuss. I popped off for a cigarette and asked the manager about this gift, he apologised and had it sent with the desserts. All in all a fantastic evening. I like the chilled out atmosphere, I could quite easily pop in here for something to eat with friends dressed casually, but also feel confident that I could bring clients here. The management seemed to make a point of going to every table, at first I thought he was just a very popular fella.
We both left satisfied and smiling, thanks guys I will be returning.

Not impressed with my second visit. Friday night, sat down at table half an hour late, a cosy meal for two and we were sat next to a bunch of rowdy chaps on a night out. The seating arrangement could have been so much better. We left.
Why take a reservation when it is obvious that they will not be able to accommodate it until later on.

I won't be going back again, had a lovely lunch the next day at the Zinc bar and grill.

Visited one evening, the mood was relaxed, not too quiet and waiter was attentive and polite. Management do walk around a lot but some would say they are keeping check on the running of the business. Thought the food was really good and well enjoyed, everything was up to expectations, the chicken was perfect, not too much, and the steak sandwich was small but enough for one and tasted amazing. Great place to eat in the evening , prices could be lower but what do you expect from such a busy place?
