Grill On The Alley review
Grill On The Alley manchester photoThe brand new Grill On The Alley has set tongues wagging in Manchester. Combining modern British and European dishes with speciality grills and steaks, the food is out of this world. The fact that this establishment is run by the Living Ventures team is no surprise - they seem to be able to roll out eateries at a frantic pace without compromising the quality.

Expect the bill to come in at around £30+ for two, including wine. Despite the relatively high charge, the Grill On The Alley is well worth a visit.

Went with my partner and must say the food and the service were excellent. Cannot fault anything. Sian our server was very attentive but not pushy. She explained the menu fully, explaining what was off and any specials.

I had the Thai Fishcakes to start which were delicios. Nice big flakes of Salmon and potato. Nicely presented. My partner had the Camembert which he really enjoyed.

The mains were also excellent. Have found it very hard to get a decent steak in this country but have now found the perfect place. The steak was cooked to perfection. We did not have room for dessert but some of the options did look very yummy.

Will certainly be back

We went to this restaurant a few weeks ago , I have to say we had fantastic service , the food was great , nothing seemed to be a problem at all , we were a large party and the puddings were a little late , the waitress knocked off the puddings from the final bill as well as the service charge for the whole party (without us asking) which I thought was very good

I booked a table for my boyfriends birthday and was a bit wary after reading the reviews but we thought we would give it a go. We got there at 5.30 and were seated straight away. Our waiter Jed was very helpful but not forceful in the slightest. My boyfriend ordered the rib eye steak, asking for it to be medium and it came out perfect, he said it was the best quality steak he has ever eaten. I ordered the Shetland salmon which was the best salmon I've ever eaten! The only thing I was not happy about was the size of the portions in relation to what we were paying. I had to ask for a side orders to make my meal a meal. However all together me and my boyfriend were really pleased. We will definitely be going back there again.

Went on Friday night for a birthday treat, we arrived 15 minutes early but were seated at our table right away and our drinks were brought straight over to us. Hardly any wait at all for our food and it was all lovely, as was the service. Staff were very helpful and food was delicious. Absolutely nothing bad at all to say! Will definately be going again!

Ive been three times and each time was great. The half lobster meal is amazing. If you've not been and you love steak & seafood you HAVE to try this place!

I went here on Friday evening, the restaurant was busy but that didn't reflect on the level of service offered. The steaks were fantastic (as was the blueberry mess!) and I will definitely be going back there again.

Anybody who thinks this place is a patch on Gaucho's for steaks is an idiot with no taste.

If you like steak, burgers and well grills this is an OK place to go. But for fish and food that is served with sauces and more flavour I wouldn't recommend it - fish stew distinctly average. The waiters also kept topping up our glasses so you land up whizzing through a bottle of wine really fast then they invite you to buy another so you can end up with a big drinks bill.

Seriously I'd ignore the bad reviews. My girlfriend and I went for her birthday and had a feed of oysters followed by fillet and sirloin steaks.... absolutely brilliant, definitely puts up a good fight for Gaucho's. The review above says about £30+ for two, I spent nigh on £100 for two - but then you're going to if you wash your steak down with 6 mojitos!

Went on Saturday last early evening booked in advance. Short wait for table, staff very very good and attentive. Food was excellent but served on cold plates therefore if seated downstairs the food could have been hotter, basic error this. However would go again as quality of food and staff was excellent

What a great place ! Went today for lunch with the girls - really busy but staff were fab. Great mussels. I heard it was a steakhouse but they have loads of fish and other stuff too. Really impressed. Only negative comment I could make is that we had to wait for a table - bloody Christmas shoppers !

What a disgrace, we made a reservation for 9:30 and arrived on time. After 20 minutes we were told our table would be a further half an hour. We weren't offered a drink or explanation.

Obviously we left to find an alternate eating experience and will definitely not return to this poorly run excuse for an up market Berni Inn.

No wonder she was laughing at you, you were only drinking a £45 bottle of rioja, not a '87 Château Pétrus! Can you imagine how much she would have laughed at you had she seen your illiterate and emotional review. Were you drunk when you wrote it or are you always that stupid?

went two days ago..very very disappointed, as my husband and myself are both big wine and food lovers..
ostridge stake come to fast, to over salted, and on greasy, and cold plate.. my lobster was OK....
what surprised me a lot is that manageress(long curly hair) come to open our £45 Rioja bottle, she struggled a lot, don't know how to open a bottle of wine, and after I asked to open capsule on the second part of neck, she looked me very strange(she obviously don't have idea about wine service, as if you open the bottle close to the cork the wine will come in contact with metal capsule, and that is called oxidation), she didnt really listen what i was nicely asked from her, she just moaned something, and pure the wine in my glass not opening properly), not only she don't have knowledge, she also dont have passion, as when she was opening the bottle, she looked away, not paying attention, an laughing to somebody else.....i think she have big attitude problem, as i asked her nicely and polite, not in arrogant way...(a lot of confidence and low knowledge)she actually refused what i asked from her, just ignoring me.
waiter service was good...but i was really disappointed with toilet, as none of them was working, they send me in disabled one, and i have to wait when one cook come out, not really good impression

I feel that I must defend this place as I took my girlfriend here on her birthday (18.6.07) before a night on the town. I was actually impressed, drinks were prompt food was to a high standard and the management almost blow my socks off. We got there a bit late but no problem and sat straight away. (I had dropped a little gift for her earlier that day to have it waiting on the table but it wasn’t there) We ordered some drinks that took no time at all. To start with I had some very nice fat juicy prawns served in a mini frying pan and she had the soup served in a mini cauldron, I loved this.
Then we both had a steak each, some sides and a bottle of wine. I managed to spill hollandaise sauce everywhere that someone cleaned up with minimal fuss. I popped off for a cigarette and asked the manager about this gift, he apologised and had it sent with the desserts. All in all a fantastic evening. I like the chilled out atmosphere, I could quite easily pop in here for something to eat with friends dressed casually, but also feel confident that I could bring clients here. The management seemed to make a point of going to every table, at first I thought he was just a very popular fella.
We both left satisfied and smiling, thanks guys I will be returning….

not impressed..... with my second visit, Friday night, sat down at table 1/2 hour late, a cosy meal for two and we were sat next to a bunch of rowdy chaps on a night out, the seating arrangement could have been so much better. We left.
Why take a reservation when it is obvious that they will not be able to accommodate it until later on.

I won't be going back again, had a lovely lunch the next day at the Zinc bar and gill

visited one evening, the mood was relaxed not too quite and waiter was attentive and polite, management do walk around a lot but some would say they are keeping check on the running of the business, though the food was really good and well enjoyed, everything was up to expectations the chicken was perfect not too much and the steak sandwich was small but enough for one and tasted amazing. great place to eat in the evening , prices could be lowered but what do you expect from such a busy place.

Went last night. Had to prompt a waiter to get me a drink, having sat patiently at my table for 15 minutes. Ordered starter and main course : baked camembert & v well done fillet steak. Camembert came with only three crisp breads, which were (a) insufficient for the amount of cheese, and (b) were so thin that they broke off with the slightest dollop. Waited patiently for another 25 minutes for my main course – waiter came over asked me if I wanted another drink; I told him that I’d prefer to know where my main course was – “Well you did ask for very well done, but I’ll find out if you want” – hope he got a refund from the charm school. Lone behold, the steak and side order of chips arrived within an instant – “Good timing” said the waiter; based on the congealed fat globules surrounding the rather dry-looking fillet, as well as the greasy, tepid chips, more like the food had been left forgotten in the kitchen for the past twenty minutes. I asked the waiter for some French mustard and another glass of wine; after waiting another 10 minutes, whilst my food went stone cold, I had had enough, left my table, remonstrated with the manager – who agreed to cover the bill for the one of glass of wine + starter – and went off to another restaurant (wine served in 5 mins, food in 15). A truly dreadful dining experience, and needless to say I will not be going back again and/or recommending to my colleagues.

I went recently and had a really lovely time. The lobster and steak is perfectly adequate for two people, (no wonder the nation is becoming obese if people think otherwise) it was nicely cooked and the service could not have been better. The apple fajita dessert is delicious and wonderfully messy, it's refreshing to see something other than sticky toffee or chocolate pudding and again is enough for two. Thank you Grill on the Alley and see you soon!

I must say I agree with the last comment the Management walk around the restaurant but seem to do nothing but stand chatting in a VERY cluttered fire escape by the disabled toilet. Both the kitchen and bar staff constantly scream numbers like two hundred and nine hundred totally spoiling any kind of relaxation. The tables seem to have been shoe horned in as tightly as possible and prices are absurd. I must state the Table staff are very attentive although a little pushy in the way of trying to force you to spend more and asking “is that a double measure” The food its self is the highest of quality the Kobe steak is superb and actually not a bad price at £50.00, my wife really enjoyed the lamb cutlets and our Guests shared the lobster and steak served on a wooden board they seemed to really enjoy this but I feel were a little disappointed at the amount (or lack of) food.
Over all I found our experience less than satisfactory, although I think properly ran this could be one of the best steak house in Manchester

Shame really - £160 for four with absolutely no "WOW" at all. Stay clear of the steak and lobster combo for two - you get the smallest steak (dry) and a prawn on steroids with a single side of veg (not two !) for £48 ! Could be so much better if they sorted the menu out and decided what they were going to be good at. Ostrich fillet comes with nothing is a good example of menu surprises you don't want. Summary - lots of money for ordinary food.

A very disappointing pre-Christmas lunch. we had to wait at reception for 5 minutes as 3 members of staff either chatted to each other or struggled to work out the computerised booking form. we then had a plate of oysters which had been opened poorly and we suspect gave ruined our Christmas and though we had a lovely waitress we were pretty much ignored by other staff inc. an army of managers who appeared to do nothing but wander around giggling with each other. very underwhelming experience.
