Vermillion review
Vermillion manchester photoUpdated March 2009

We've just added the latest menus from Vermilion below. Some mixed reviews coming in recently - if you've been to Vermilion, or are going soon, let us know what you thought!

----------------------------------------------------

Vermilion Review Update: June 2008 - A raft of negative reviews have been whispered to us by readers unhappy with the food and service at Vermilion. The huge venue - located in 'Miles Platting' - was warmly received when it opened, but as of late it appears to have been ticking all the wrong boxes.

A new £5 million restaurant and bar, part of the Seamark Group and next door to their restaurant wholesaler. The restaurant will be "one of the most fashionable in England", serving Thai food and with two hundred covers, plus a private dining room for up to twenty four and a bar with space for a further three hundred guests.

The restaurant and bar are close to the City of Manchester stadium - the food will no doubt go down well, but can they fill a three hundred capacity bar?

Vermilion opened in December 2007, with a well attended launch party. The venue is working hard to get over its Achilles heel, which is its location, in deepest, darkest, Eat Manchester. "Up and coming" is probably a nice word for it, but you have to admire the restaurant owners for at least giving this a go.

Went Friday night for a meal with my Girlfriend. Everything was fantastic, decor is very impressive, the food is amazing, the best service ive ever had in a restaurant even though it was really busy. The cocoon beds in the bar is a nice touch and their DJ spot on. Highly recommended if you want to impress anyone.

Had food on 9th June,I thought they serve Thai only but to our surprise they served us authentic Indian food,I travel all over U.K and am very fond of Indian food,I would recommend this place for both Thai and Indian.

Had a meal here on Friday, the food was very good, the service was fine but it was very expensive!
A service charge is added to your bill- which I don't like, it should be a customers choice to leave a tip & I am quite sure that the management don't pass the tips on to the staff.
Cocktails at £7.50 each were more ice than anything else - so would not recommend them & drinks overall are expensive!
It was fine as a one off experience, as the venue is a little more interesting than your standard restaurant & the food was good.
I would not be going again in a hurry as you can can easily find food just as good for literally half the price, you are paying for the "experience" so don't expect value for money!

Mouth watering authentic dishes, posh atmosphere, best service. We do not get all this around central manchester. We love to go there on regular basis.

After being recommended by many of my friends, I decided to have dinner on Tuesday at Vermilion and I have to say the place is breathtaking. The service was excellent and the food was exquisite. Plus it was really packed for Tuesday. I agree with the person below they should make one in Dubai / New York, it's a world class venue in Manchester. I will definitely be coming back. Thank You.

Went on a hen night to Vermillion , poor choice , food ok but way way too spicy , water £4.50 a bottle , service good , no party atmosphere just a volatile one as if it was going to kick off , no bouncers on doors and plenty of dodgy looking characters in there. Overpriced and overrated would not return.
Beware of extra service charge that will be added to bill , check bill carefully if there are a lot of you as extras were added to ours.

Sounds like another restaurant that looks good but thats about it. I was going to go with friends but i have changed my mind. It's horrible going to eat out and you don't get your food the way you expected it and with bad service.

Have been several times midweek and the food and service have always been good. We went on Saturday evening and it was not good. For sure the service was ok and the place was packed but when your starters arrive within 2 minutes of ordering (we ordered the set menu at £25 a head) then to me something is amiss, as in the food was prepared well in advance and you could tell when eating it. It was bland. Main courses arrived just as quick and were even worse. The caramelised chicken was hard and dry and all the dishes were just warm and in no time were cold and one small bowl of rice between two was stingy. It was express food that would be well suited to an express take away and with a bill of nearly £100 it was frankly a rip off. The waiter never even asked if the meal was ok. I have recommended this place to a lot of people and now will have to add a caveat that you must only go mid week or suffer bland, lukewarm and expensive food that is not worth it. Also the management must look at the wine list prices. A bottle of NV Laurent Perrier at £105 a bottle (£60 in most other places), yet for £45 more you can have a bottle of Krug?

Four of us travelled quite a distance after learning from a friend about Vermilion. We read the reviews here, and although they were mixed, we took our chances. Going there was amazing, out of town it was, but to see it randomly in the middle of nowhere was crazy! We were impressed highly with the food and the service we received was amazing considering it was a friday night. I think most people here must be blowing it a little out of proportion. Yeah the food was a bit late but it's a little ignorant to think that they are the only ones in the restaurant and you have to consider this place is massive. It's not your local restaurant, where we're from this is normal, but the atmosphere and the poeple you're with makes up for it. People in manchester need to realise this.

I would highly recommend this place.

We went to Vermilion last night for a friends 30th. After reading these reviews, we were very sceptical about going, especially as my boyfriend wasn't well, but we couldn't let our friend down. I am so glad that we did go, and I highly recommend trying this place out. Our group of 15 were sat in our own little area and seated at a round table with a Lazy Susan, which we found great. We ate from one of the set menus and although the portions of food were not huge, we did not leave hungry. Even better for those who were planning to go on drinking afterwards. The food tasted amazing and I even sampled things I hadn't before. As for the drinks, they were expensive but i think you would know about that already if you were choosing to drink champagne or the £6000 bottle of Hennassy they have on the menu. My advice is to get your drinks from the bar and then there's no confusion at bill time. I found the staff to be helpful and polite and think you would definately be missing out if you didn't give this place a try.

This place is utterly diabolical, totaly overpriced and the managers there think they are all gods, it is a joke. Booked a table for 8 people and got one for 6.
Main meals came out before the starters, the sweets never arrived and so we never got one and when the bill came they had charged for a bottle of vodka at £60 that we never had. The managers accused us of lying about the vodka then when we had a go at the waitress she was the only person in the place to appologise. She told us that even the staff suffer at this place, they are being paid cash in hand for 7 hour shifts and made to work 10 hours.

Trying to back up your own opinion with someone of who could possibly not excist seems rather sad. Stand on your own two feet without involving the staff. Can't imagine any staff memeber saying that to soemone complaining!!! Highly unlikely! Would ignore this review!

p.s extremely expensive so take your credit card.

I went for a birthday last nite with six other girls, in total there was 7 of us, from start to finish it was an absolute disaster. We started with champagne in the bar upstairs when one of the champagne flutes smashed, a clean break from the stem to the flute, and the champagne went all over one of the girls. We had the rudest waitress and when we asked for another glass of £20 per glass champagne, we had huffs and puffs and really rude service. Then another waitress knocked one of my friends over getting to the bar, literally knocked her over, with no apology. Then we were seated at a six seater table, when we booked two weeks ago for a seven, so we had to swap tables. When we swapped tables they sat us in the doorway and 2 of the girls had a draft from the opening/closing of the big automatic doors. My food was gorgeous, but some of my friends were dissapointed at how spicy their curries were as they ruined the flavor with to many spices. Then to top off this fantastic evening, they put on six extra drinks on our bill, that were not ours, and a £25 service charge which we did not pay. And yet after all this, they offered no apology, no complementary drink, no reduction in the bill - awful. This has put me off for life and I'm sure i speak for all my friends as well. Shocking service and try and get a drink upstairs. We were there from 8.15pm-1.15am and that was probably with quick service. No one would take responsibility for their actions, they have lost a lot of buisiness as I will never go again.

Would seem your just a pro and trying to get something for nothing

I love Vermillion, I have been three times now and I just wanna go again. Yes, the prices are very high but it's a nice treat. I love the atmosphere and the staff are very pleasent. So far I have had no problems with Vermillion and none of my friends have ever seemed to have a problem either. I hope more people go and love it just as much as i do.

Well we never got as far as food! I booked a table for a birthday meal and made a request for a nice table only to call a week later to confirm the time to be told that a reservation was never made. A complete shambles and will never even step foot through the door again. You're brave if you do.

So you havent even been to the restaurant! Hmmmm dont think this even counts as a review!

Although out of city centre was pleasantly surprised when arrived. The decor was fab but place was empty so lacked any atmosphere. Food was good although overpriced for an out of town restaurant. Would go again though on next visit to Manchester and would like to see a similar venue in Newcastle.

This was the worst experience of my life. What I planned to be a very special Valentine's day for me and my boyfriend, I pre-paid for set meal and bottle of champagne as a suprise. Everything a shambles from beginning to end. Disorganisation was so apparent. Staff being shouted at, the whole night makes me want to cry. None of our food came in order, didn't get half of it. Dessert came instead of starter, sorbet didn't come at all, then got told I wasn't allowed a sorbet with the set menu. Then someone said sorry you should get one, it will come soon, it never came. Main meals came but no plates. After a long wait for plates food was cold. They took food back and we waited an hour- when the food finally came it was all wrong. At this point we said we were leaving and told by Management meal would be refunded and they took my name and address.
No-one contacted me at all. I have phoned them many times only to be treated like a liar with a frosty reception from them. It's not my fault their restaurant is bad so don't take it out on me. Seriously considering going to the Manchester Evening News and telling them my ordeal to warn others not to go.

This restaurant has disgusting service and management problems.

I recently went to this restaurant for a birthday meal with 26 additional people. Upon arrival, we were told that we all had to choose the same set menu with no variance allowed at all. As there were 27 of us, this was a major issue.

Next problem, we ordered the highest priced set menu as there were nicer dishes on offer and because it was the only menu offering an authentic Thai dessert dish. The wait between each course was about an hour, the wait for drinks was about 30 minutes. Service was slow and sloppy. The waitress was unprofessional in setting out new cutlery; new sets of cutlery were just placed randomly on the table and not with their respective users.

Onto the dessert - we were told that they had run out of Thai sticky rice dessert (the whole reason we had opted to pay an additional ten pounds for that set menu). Instead they gave us "mango cheesecake with icecream" consisting of badly flavoured cheesecake and a very artificial plastic layer of mango. This was not a nice mango compote but a layer of thin orange plastic.

The bill came, it was reasonably priced until we noticed a 10% tip charge that was "compulsory". Trading standards state that any compulsory charges must be clearly stated on the menu, which they weren't. This was not even the annoying part. We had already asked whether any additional charges would be added and the manager at the time had told us that we would be paying nothing extra.

A tip charge is acceptable considering we were a big party, however forcing customers to eat the same thing and still having really bad service was not acceptable.

To end my review, do not eat here unless you want to leave feeling angry and cheated.

I got to this place last night around 9pm with my girlfreind for a valentines meal and I could not agree more with Matthew. This place was a joke besides it looking very nice, which is the only thing keeping it going, me and my girlfriend ordered a bottle of champagne at around £60, I think it tasted like cheap £10 cava from Asda. After this we looked at the menu. After around three minutes of looking over the menu and not even drinking the champagne we decided to leave. As we got up to walk out I was confronted by one of the staff who said I have already had my food and I need to pay. After ten minutes of them going on and me not paying for their stupid set menu, which we actually never had, they found that they had the wrong table. This was a disgrace. Me and my girlfriend stood there looking so stupid infront of everyone. I would not recommend this place at all, infact I would go to Pizza Hut before i went back there.

And after all that we still had to pay £60 for the champagne just to leave. Does anyone think that I shouldn't have paid them ?

Had a valentines meal there last night; all I can say is I was extremely dissapointed. Table was very late, not a big issue granted. It was a set menu (3 choices of set menus available on the night (£33,£44 & £72)), which again is not a big problem, but when we were about to order our waiter informed us that "because they are so busy you have to pick a menu for the both of you", i.e. both have the exact same set menu! What's the bloody point of a menu then? This was particularly annoying given that I am a veggie whilst my girlfriend isn't. This was not mentioned either when I booked the week before, paying the £20 deposit, which they conveniently forgot to knock off the bill first time around. Wonder how many people got duped into that one on the night. Can I just say that nothing annoys me more than when a restaurant moans that it is 'too busy'. They are a business at the end of the day, to provide a service that we, the consumer, pay alot of money for. Service was very slow, maybe its an isolated occasion due to 'how busy they were', as there are a lot of positive reviews on here. Now, some positives. The decor and design of the restaurant and bar upstairs is brill. Really relaxed and chilled out. Cocktails were very nicely done, whilst expensive you really do get what you pay for. The food, whilst not to my personal taste was very good. Summary: I'd class my experience as typical on a night like Valentines/NYE/Christmas etc."Pack em in, rush the service, over charge them and kick them out". I won't be going back.

Attended a private function there on 10.2.09
I honestly could not fault it, the service was excellent and the food was amazing, hot, a huge choice and excellent service. If you find fault with this establishment, you must be very hard to please

Went to this restaurant in December for my son's birthday and had a "set menu" which, although not cheap, was absolutely superb. Decided to try it again last Saturday 31/1/2009 and was appaled to find that the service and food had deteriorated so badly in such a short time. Once again we went for a "set menu" but the food was barely warm, plates were piping hot when placed on the table but as the courses took so long to arrive they too were cold. Not sure if I would rush back for a 3rd visit. Pity because as I said the first time was excellent but it just seemed to me that the staff have stopped trying and maybe it is living on its reputation at the moment.

The best Thai Restaurant in Cheshire I have found is the Samrab in Knutsford - it is small and a little pokey but that only adds to its charm. The staff are friendly and remember who you are,the food is fantastic. We called after reading the reviews on "Virtual Knutsford's" website. We were definitely not disappointed. And oh yes they serve real ale.

I would recomend not going to this bar and restaurant. As someone who has worked very successfuly in the industry for over 8 years I have had lots of experience of good and bad service. We went for what should have been a very special night with 30 friends and family in August (My 30th and engagement). The bar service was incredibly slow, didn't know how to make basic classic cocktails and didnt give out wine buckets with bottles of wine (training is obviously not high on their agenda). After lots of telephone calls (all of which have not been returned) I am still arguing for my deposit back. Terrible customer service, slow bartenders and very bad communication with each other and customers. Will never be going again.

I went for a works do. We had a buffet and it was not the best food I've ever eaten for a works do. I would not recomend it. There is nowhere to relax and enjoy yourself, there was a DJ but no dance floor plus the bar was running out of drinks towards the end of the night and the drinks are expensive. I would not go back even for the decor which was very good. Have a merry christmas and new year, but not here.

We were there on Saturday 6th December for our works Christmas party and thought the place was stunning but sadly the evening was spoilt by poor service, food that was barely warm when it finally arrived (served late and a long, long wait between courses) and as we were sitting near the doors we were absolutely freezing. Didn't have dessert as we were so cold we went back to the bar where thankfully it was warmer. My advice: if you're going take a coat and scarf, and gloves. If we had to pay for it ourselves we would have been very upset because it just was not worth the huge menu prices. Sorry but wont be back.

i find this review bizarre as there are no tables near doors where a draft can come from? The main doors with any draft are on the lower level which is a nice touch and are at lease two stair cases away or a lift away. I find it amazing how a draft managed to get up the lift and to the table????

30 of us celebrated our friends birthday and we were treated to some awesome food. But beware - we were stiched up royally for a £400.00 bill on top of food for booze. Some of the guys decided to add some very expensive drinks onto the bill before disappearing early or not owning up - strange as most people paid waiters at the table. Oh, £100.00 service charge too. Bit steep seeing as we had a tray of drinks spilled on us in the first five minutes by a clumsey waiter. Shame as it is an amazing space and good food. Would go again but in a much smaller group.
