Sankeys review
Sankeys manchester photo***Updated July 2010***

Sankeys finally achieved its long held ambition of topping the ‘best clubs in the world’ list this year, an achievement not to be taken lightly as it saw off stiff competition from the likes of Fabric, Pacha, Space and Manchester’s own Warehouse Project, who also made the top ten. Sankeys is riding high.

***Updated June 2009***

Sankeys continues to thrive in the annual DJ Magazine poll of ‘The Best Clubs in the World’, coming in at number 16 from the DJs vote and a very respectable number five in the clubber’s poll in 2009. The club has seen some stiff competition for ‘best club in Manchester’in the last year or so from the much respected Warehouse Project, but perhaps benefits from the seasonal nature of its rival. Since a refurbishment in 2006, Sankeys has continued looking for new ways to draw the punters in, with a long awaited ‘beach’ finally seeing the light of day this year (50 tonnes of sand brought in to provide a summery ambience) and, of course, the ever impressive line up of top DJs that have graced the decks increasing every week. If music of the electronic persuasion is your thing, in pretty much any of its forms, Sankeys is definitely the place to check out in Manchester.

Sankeys prides itself on maintaining a pure clubbers’ ethic and has an infamously unpredictable door policy. In 2007 a group of lads hit the headlines for being refused entry for not being ‘funky enough’, their attire apparently not in keeping with that of ‘genuine clubbers’, and there have been reports of people being refused entry despite holding tickets and even being on the guest list.

Despite such reports, Sankeys remains a favourite of clubbers worldwide and they continue to bring in the big names of dance music to please the clubbing masses.

Home to Tribal Sessions and 'Sankeys Saturdays', Sankeys Soap (now renamed as just Sankeys) brings some of the biggest names in DJs to their newly refurbished venue.

The weekly Tribal Sessions takes in the underground sounds - deep house, tribal, breakbeat and anything in between. Sankeys Saturdays are a more glam affair, with funky house the order of the day. Other events at Sankeys include Club NME (Guitars), Octopussy (Students) and Rejeckt (Breaks).

Although the recent refit has given Sankeys a more mainstream look & feel, this is still a club that continues to push the musical boundaries.

Sankeys looks amazing now, I thought they would be too mainstream but the underground vibe is still there. Well done and had a great night at the re-opening party.

Not as good as the Sankeys of old. Still good though.

I went to Sankeys New Year's Eve 2006. I had an amazing night, definitely one to remember. Like an electro sundissential, or something.

Well, I hearJamilia is singing live at Sankeys tonite, something to do with a talent show. I tried to get in but the queue was far too long. What a shame as MTV are recording this. I guess I will have to watch it on television. Sankeys, what other surprises have you in the bag? You are just amazing. Although I missed tonight I will be there this bank holiday, can't wait.

I use to go to Sankeys when Golden was there in 95/96/97.
Back then it was ultimate. I loved it every time. The best was when Seb Fontaine, Tony Di Vite was there spinning those hard tunes.
I will go again as it was the life there.

I used to go to the mid nineties Golden nights as well. Absolutely superb. Seb Fontane, Rob Tisera, John Kelly, Pete Bromley, Carl Cox, Sonique - even Boy George. Never had a bad nite. It was the crowd. Always dead friendly. I loved that Sankeys feel. Best years of my clubbin life!!! :) Golden was never the same when it moved back to Stoke.

Sankeys is the best club in Manchester. It's changed a lot since the good old Sankeys but that does not mean it is worse. Full of sexy women, fantasitc line-ups of DJs and the layout of the club is amazing. With the terrace now open so you can go out and chill with a fag and beer, where else can you do that? Disco Electronica is the best night in Manchester when it's on. Vincent, well played lad!

Amazing, best club in Manchester. David Guetta was class. I liked the old sankeys but the new sankeys is so much better.

I was gutted when me and my freinds were refused entry for the Hacienda gig. We turned up early doors so we could beat the queues but we were point blank refused entry even though we had tickets and a couple of us were on the guest list. I have been to Sankeys thousands of times and never been refused entry. We had tickets and those bouncers wouldn't let us in. It would never have happened at the real Hacienda. Sort your neck out Sankeys.

Top night always at Sankeys, yet if you have never been before don't let people hype it up too much as you might be disappointed compared to what people say about Sankeys. Best club in Manchester though and it will be hard to beat.

I went for the first time on Friday. Class. I used to go to Bolton and Wigan, and now I've lived the Sankeys dream and thought it was class. If people are whinging that it used to be better, then they are lucky they got that experience.

Ok, went to Sankeys last night sort of on a whim, knew it was £12 but had the money. Firstly, it's lucky we got in because the three Asian lads infront of us got refused entry. Then the Bouncer was like,"Were do you go in town? Which clubs do you like and what music are you into?". Luckily I just said a few places and I liked house music, couldn't really think. But it was as though if I'd said the wrong genre of music or wrong club they would have told us to get off. Then when we get inside there was none of the laser or smoke machines going off. The one time before when I had been, it was Kaluki night, that was on. It was just much better. It gets better - I realise that they have rearranged the smoking section. Now we had to go upstairs to the top section(which by the way was absolutely heaving, no space to dance without hitting into people) and queue up for at least 15 minutes so we could go for a cigarette, before you could just go outside whenever you wanted. Oh yeah and the music was awful last night, we had been in Queer in the village beforehand, the music was vrtually the same in Sankeys, but you have to pay £12? Sort it out.

A group of 12 of us drove up from Cardiff to go to Sankeys on Saturday. All of us are in the industry, some of us are DJs, others are club managers, promoters, radio PCs, etc. We paid £11 for tickets, queued (not all together) then some doorman said our "faces didn't fit". What sort of reason is that? When I asked what the reason was he wouldn't tell me just started pushing me out of the way. We were only refunded £10 out of the £11 and we were not the only ones being turned away. It was obviously the case if you have been there before you are all right to get in. (so if you are going there I suggest tell them you have been there before) Also, loads of people who had tickets were turned down so don't buy tickets ahead of the night cos they must have made a fortune on the booking fees. So thank you Sankeys for messing our night in Manchester up.

We (six lads) went on Saturday. We were a mix of first timers and very occasional visitors to Sankeys. We had no trouble getting in and had a very good night. Well done Sankeys.

Re. the review below, maybe the bouncers spotted your little "not all together" ruse and considered you might have been up to mischief. Just a thought.

Awful, hateful club. The refurb is terrible, the queues for the terrace are ridiculous and the crowd is incredibly Deansgate, with girls with fake tan and heels on. Sort this out, I'm not going back there until they do. Bring on 24th Jan with the opening of the club where the old paradise factory was, that'll send Sankeys into the ground.

Sankeys is the dogs. I've been going for years and nothing beats it.

Not a fan of the new decor or the new crowd but never had any problems getting in the place, just be polite and try not to look totally off your tits before you go and you'll get in fine. A smile for the bouncers always works wonders. I've even been bought a beer by one before (admitedly he did hold me up by my neck against the wall, but that's another story)
If you go with a group of mates go on a night where its someone you want to see and ignore the pretentious people and pull some shapes. Fridays are a lot more laid back affairs, but still hit and miss. I've been times where half the crowd there just stood still, but then other times where everyone has crouched on the floor and got raving on the ground (thank you dave spoon).

In all it's a class venue still, admitedly without some of the old magic and dirtyness it used to have and the drinks prices are a joke, but then again it is a club so to be expected. I can't count the number of times I've been to this place, but the number of times I havent had an amazing night is maybe twice.

Oh I still love Sankeys. Friday is and always has been a much, much better night than Saturday and girls, why are you wearing heels and straightening your hair? I'm 28 and used to go in 2001/03 almost every weekend.Back then it was a sweat box, people dancing on their backs, swinging from the pipes above the old DJ box (which was in a better position then) and all the barmen were on pills who barely charged £2 for a drink or mostly gave them away free (thankyou Andy). Any night is what you make it and I'm eternally grateful I can look back on my early 20s and know that this club has brought me so many happy memories and fun nights out. A strapless top and a pair of baggy jeans is all you want in there, lets stop this pretentious stuff. It doesn't feel right in there. It's a cool, underground gritty place that's losing its edge a bit. Bring back Tribal Sessions and the 12 hour day raves 5 times every Summer. Danny T 2002-we love you!

First time, thought it would be more classy for the money. It's tiny and it's too dark and drinks are a rip off. Oh and the bouncers all look well stressed, not very friendly. Best bit was the excellent music.

Sankeys is the best place to party in Manchester, refurbishment is brillant, the night is what you make it. Yeah it can be full of pretentious people who can be clicky, but don't let small minded people wreck Sankeys' reputation. Rock it, ignore people, enjoy yourself, chill out - Sankeys is the place to be. And give the doormen a rest, after all, how would we feel having to put up with a small minority of idiots all night long.

I live opposite Sankeys and my apartment overlooks it. From when I have been and what I can hear almost every single night it seems to have some great music and cracking nights. Anyone for a party at mine?

How much actually are the drinks? Heard some nonsense. I hope it's not true. Not everyone pills it in there.

By far the best in Manchester, used to love Venus but Sankeys is amazing, can't wait to go again next week.

Sankeys is not how it use to be. I was so disappointed at new year it was an absolute waste of money. Not much thought gone into the theme whatsoever. The bouncers made an akward atmosphere and at 3am, when we'd paid 30 each for tickets till 6am, they were trying to tell me I could not go back in when I had stepped four steps past the front doormen. Use to be great now greatly below average.

I'm a regular at Sankeys, been going about a year and you are guaranteed to have a good night. I've never had a bad one there yet. Atmosphere is good, never any fighting because the bouncers are scary tall, but it's a good place to be. Everyone there to have fun and I always do. My favorite place in Manchester at the minute.

emma concannon says...

Anyone reading /writing these absurd reviews that Sankeys is any good is unfortunate not to have been to any of the days of when it was Sankeys Soap. I've been going for 8 years and the place was heaven on earth. I went to the closing down and re-opening nights and me and 20 other regulars could have cried. It's full of hip/trendy poshies and the music is now cheap and tacky. End of an era, you poor, poor people.
